supplement question

Has anyone every heard of Kent Liquid Reactor? The guy at my LFS tells me it is all I need for calcium and alkalinity. Is he correct?

depends what you are doing, but yes from what I understand that is all you need for a reef tank.... sounds like a good lfs if they say all you need is that.

I am just trying to maintain my calcium and alkalinity with additives. I am trying to learn more about it but I am a little confused by what the best way to supplement is. I have heard really bad things about limewater, I cant spend the money right now on a calcium reactor so I am currently doing a two part, kent super dkh and kent part a and part b calcium.

It is not a useful additive, IMO. The primary ingredient, the fine aragonite, does not dissolve in seawater unless the pH is very low.

I test and discuss similar products here:

Calcium Carbonate as a Supplement

I debated it online with Kent a few years ago, and they were unable to come up with any explanation of why it might work, nor when I challenged them and all of RC, did anyone claim to have actually used it alone for extended periods in a thriving reef tank.

here's that thread:

The part I don't get is how can a alk. and cal. supplement be put together in the same bottle. wouldn't they counter react with each other making one or the other usless. thats why most cal. and alk. supplements are packaged seperatly.

I was told by some other local people they had big problems with PH, using limewater, they are novice like me.

I do appreciate all the information.

I have two more questions if I could. I will read through the articles but what do you personally believe is the best way to go?

Also can I add these additives to my RO and get the levels right in that water before I add it?

again I really appreciate the help.

Yes, because it has a high pH it needs to be added slowly, like dripping. Aside from that, and making sure your tanks needs all you are adding, it is not really problematic.

That is how people usually dose limewater. You cannot use two part systems or CaCO3 in top off water.

I use limewater, and have for more than a decade, but there is no "better" between the three types I mentioned. They each have pros and cons that may relate more or less strongly to you, your time, your wallet, your tanks size, and what you want to keep in it. :)

Liquid reactor is primarily finely ground calcium carbonate. It is already reacted before they put it into the bottle. :D
