Surface skimmer?

Hey guys I'm running a canister filter on my 75gal reef tank. I was thinking of switching the intake to a surface skimming attachment. My question is, does the intake only taking from the surface of the water not provide adequate filtration? Rather than the intake being lower in the water column?

The attachment below will handle a bit of both. I bought it on eBay. I had this one when I used a canister and it worked great. As far as your question, most reef tanks only do surface skimming and that causes no issues.
