I want this guy so bad but I am worried it might die. Whats the best way to introduce a baby maxim to a tank? I have a 5-6inch maxim now but I know the babies are hard to keep alive but hes back and deep purple for 35 bucks. :D

in a mature system and with phyto feedings I've kept them till they got large enough to do without the phyto additions. it's more 'work', so is it worth that extra effort to you?

I disagree with jetcat, in that phyto feedings are not necessary in a suitably stable and stocked tank.

In termsd of mortality, the best thing you can do to counter is to provide stable suitable conditons, eliminate predators and stress. Not much else you can do.

Yeah my test from the water are consitant I did have the nitrates jump up while on vacation from 5-15 but in time will drop back down. Is this clam worth 40 buck I made a error on the price, I haven't seen a black and purple before.

I don't think your tank is right for that little clam -- I believe that it would be much happier in MY tank:D - lol

I have been looking for a black an purple clam for a while, most say purple but are really bluish - send it my way.

Tridacna maxima are a little challenging but with good water quilty, PROPER acclimation and tank mates they will do fine.

No doubt there are other Tridacnids easier to keep. IMO & IME

I have a baby blue maxima that size...

I've had it a good month now and it is still doing well, It's my 7th clam :) and its for sure way way way smaller then them all, I just had to have it when I seen that baby blue....

I say if your tank is aged and stable to go for it !

You already have a maxima, so I say "go for it".

Make sure you take your time during the acclimation period.

Survival rate of mine - 2 of 2, bought less than 1" long.

Basic tank, 10g, PC with support of direct sunlight, at least twice daily feeding for a filter feeders, smallest zooplankton and finest particles from mysis and grocery seafood, my tank can't handle dried ESV phytoplankton, alas. But green microalgae is growing on the glass walls.
Was a problem to find a suitable place, with side flow, not direct, even reflected from the glass. Then - with bristle worms, irritating one of them, placing clam on shell, not on LR, definitely helped.

Watch it, if not happy - find more peaceful place for it, if don't like one food - offer another. All the same, as with any of inhabitants.

Disclaimer: Not an expert, have only 2 clams and slightly less than an year.

there is no way to tell if the clam is "liking" the food or not. they do not even need to be fed seperately.

Didn't mean it literally, sorry:
usually everybody is watching, how the tank inhabitants are doing - if instead of usual white growth (and the clams are growing relatively fast, at least my tridacnas), the usual rate of growth slows very much, clam fail to open fully, looks not good and there are no parasites seen - I would try to change something for a better, light, flow, food or neighbours, instead of display the virtues of patience :D
But, as everything else, this is a matter of personal preferences ;)

I think they must be tough. I have . I have a very stable tank, great water parms. with great clam and SPS growth and 4 different sp. of clams including a 3.5 in maxima. A friend and I purchased 3 x 1.5-2.5 in. baby maximas from clams direct and they all died within 4-15 days. The guy at clams direct said they are very hard to keep and not for beginners. I am not really a beginner, have never lost a clam in the past but still lost these three clams.

So I say spend a little extra cash and buy larger maximas

Well guys I passed on him. The pic was from justcoral.com if anyone wants to get him. I decided I need to get my Ro/DI until before I get anything else. :(

Good decision, lots of people buy livestock they can't care for.
Get your research, then setup done first.
