Swallowtail Angels- any keepers?

doin' fin

I am currently considering a female swallowtail angel. I am finding limited info on them (probably 10 sites with much of the same profile info) and what info is available is conflicting.

Has anyone here had any experience with keeping them? What is your advice?

Any input is greatly appreciated!

Treat all genicanthus just like anthias with the exception of them not necessarily needing to feed 10 times a day. They even do the harem deal too.

When you are going to purchase one (this includes any in the genicanthus group) the main thing to look for is swim bladder issues. Make sure they are not fighting to stay down (these fish are collected from deeper down). The female lamarks and female swallowtail seem to be somewhat ok in this department, but all else seem to be touchy. There are two species of genicanthis that get sold as the same, make sure you dont get them mixed up. There is the swallowtail (Genicanthus semifasciatus), and the black spot (Genicanthus melanospilos). The female swallowtail has no face markings, but the blackspot has a mask. The males look somewhat similar, check pics online. I have seen some awesome tanks with harems, but a fish that needs to be QT, and kept in a big tank. I have used hypodermic needles on fish with swim bladder issues - it seems to be the only solution, no sort of meds have any effect. Anyways, if you have a big enough tank and are willing to QT, it is a stunning look.

got me a wanatabie male about a month ago and he is now my favorite fish. Always out, doesnt bug anyone, doesnt take any crap from the sailfin, eats like a pig and doesnt so much as glance at any corals.

Everyone I know that has had one loves it!

I have one for about 8 months now. Great fish mine eats everyhting(pellet, flake, nori). MInes about 5" head to tail but he has not grown much since I have had him. Nice fish

I got mine from Liveaquaria.com

Thanks to everyone for the info! The Swallowtails sound do-able but I am going to need to drop the H2O temp for her to be comfortable.
