Swap, Trade or Gifts???

turbois300

On again Off again Reefer
Well it was suggested to me so I figured I'd start a post from "the new guy ...Steve".

As the subject states and as some of you said you have some things that are taking over or growing in abundance in you tanks that you get rid of.

Well I just want to put myself (how rude.....I'm sorry) on your list of willing recipients to anything and everything that might help my tank become more stimulating to the eye. Fish, sand, coral, rock, algae .... anything good can't be bad... doh!!

I don't have much in the way of trade except supplies. I've got more complete magnums and parts for 220s and 350s than most pet stores. I've got big florecent strips (48") and double strips. I've got a 75 bowfront Allglass tank with black stand and glass tops. Powerheads and a few misc other gizmo's and such. That I would be more than willing to give/swap or trade for tank stuff. Or the ubiquidous(sp?) Dollar.

So let me know if any of you out there are in the mood to help out a fellow member. I can come to your location if that is an option. We don't mind a road trip most of the time (mamma's pregnant so that may vary..... )

I'll be starting a fuge soon (I think) so anything in the way of fuge supplied or inhabitants would be much appreciated. I have a ten gallon so any design ideas too would be killer) So lemme hear it..... or not..... hope I am ont imposing on anyone. Thanks in advance gang!!!

:bum:

Hey Steve,
When ever you want to make the drive out to the lake you are more than welcome to take some corals off my hands. Just give me a call or PM me when you would like to bring the family out. 798-5023

I would suggest getting a good quality coral dip if you're looking to add some corals. It's pretty much guaranteed you'll end up with a coral eating pest or at least one that multiplies incredibly fast if you don't dip your corals. Free/cheap corals are great, but there's a lot of stuff out there you wouldn't want in your aquarium. I dip every single piece that goes in any of my aquariums no matter who it came from. Even pieces of my own going from one tank to another.

Thanks ade!!!!

Let me know what looks good for you in the next week or so. I'm gonna get a fish this week (not sure what type) so maybe if you are around this weekend and I find myself with some time I'll give you a shout and head out. Any supplies you may need or anything from in town i can bring you just let me know and I'll round it up for you before i come. Thanks again for the offer

:D

Awesome! I second what Chris said , maybe the best advice you could get @ this point... I made the mistake a few times of not dipping and ended up tearing tanks down because of the frustration... and I would take the drive out to Ades just to see the tanks and those pretty Lions he has, also tell him you only want 5 lbs. of devils hand this time ok ..lol , and while you are out that way I am sure that SJDYER wouldn't mind a "pop-in" his tank is allways fun to check out. Anytime you want to swing by my place just let me know... I am sure I could frag some star polyps and Shrooms...

So I am sure that a few of us could spare a cup or 2 of sand to seed your tank and fuge. And like a few people said , Zenia is abbundant in these parts...

Sweet!!! Alrighty then!!! Educate me on the dips my brutha's. I just got done reading about this guy who had a worm outbreak and he had to tear down his whole tank. I don't want that for sure!!!! Chris maybe I can get some from you tomorrow when I come over to get a fish???? Do you have any? What is it anyways?? Eric....I'll take all 3 if you gottem?? I've got the crazy gel glue too...just let me know what else I need to bring. Thanks guys again for the help and info. Let me know what I can do for you all or when is a good time to start trying to plan a swing-by. Thanks again

Hey Steve,

You are welcome to come over any evening or weekend and check out my tanks to see what can be done with power compact lighting. It would be a bit of a drive as I live between bedford and forest.

Also got all kinds of stuff I could part with. If interested let me know. 540-587-9202 or pm me.

Hey Chris. Good advice. Can you educate me in the proper procedure for dipping?

Thanks,

Bill

Depending on what type of coral you are getting depends on what action you take to treat the coral. Chris sells a dip from Tropic Marin which IMO works great for lps/sps. If you have zoa frags then RO water dip works good on them. As far as softies, I have never done anything to softies apart from checking them for flat worms. Also the best thing to do is ask the person who you are getting the coral from it they have had any pests in the past.
Any honest person will tell you.
In my years of salt water, flat worms have been in my past. One of least destructive pests to have.

Ok this is awesome. So what is the actual technique or how long to you keep them in the dip. Maybe break it down by general coral type. i.e. zoo's in the RO for 1 min..... or something as I have no idea how long to put them in it for??? Sorry if that is a stupid question....

Jorge - thanks for the invite. My wife loves an excuse to head towards Lynchburg so she can shop. Maybe we can set something up in the near future. : )

Next time you go into UA, ask Chris. He is dipping corals every week, he can tell you what works best for him. I use the Tropic Marin dip on sps/lps and double to dose for around 10-15 min. Then blast them with some water before placing them in my tank.

Thanks ade - I may try and sneak out to Chris's after work today with my daughter to get a fish. I owe her one as our firefish pulled a jump manuver and self terminated! We have to have something "moving" in order to attract the women viewers in my house. ha hah a

Chris will dip the zoos I TM and then do a fresh water dip, and I have seen for myself that both of those do not get all stuff off... ie. small star fish, there is a good method for dipping zoos on the "zoo forum"
And Ade, I have to disagree w/ the statement that flatworm are the "least destructive" ask Matt what flatworm can do to corals. Sorry.
Good luck Steve and do research prior to buying fish for your tanks as I have lost A LOT of really nice animals because I didn't look into things a little closer.

As for flatworms really depends on what type you get. Acro eating flatworms will burn threw your acros if you dont catch them in time, the more common flatworms are more of just a nuisance then anything but can be eradicated either via a predator such as a six line or many other wrasses or through "medication" such as the Salifert flatworm exit. The acro eating flatworms PITA.

i think monti nudi's are the king of pests (not from experience of course), but i've heard if you have them, you may as well throw all your monti's away and start over again.

i've been lucky enough to only have had 1 real pest infestation problem, which was red bugs a couple of months ago. good thing they are easy to treat for now.

IMO.....algae is another form of infestation. i've gotten random pieces of algae on frags from other reefers that i didnt think was any big deal......months later i'm battling an epidemic. now whenever i see ANY algae on any rock/frag i rip it off and kill it before putting it in my tank. i wish i had been more careful when i started out.......battling algae outbreaks is such a headache.

When I was talking about flatworms I was talking about the nuisance red ones not the acro eating flat worms. Sorry "turbois300" I should have been more specific. I have only had the nuisance ones.

Shoot no worries man. Hopefully I won't have any... but if i do my 20lbs of rock and sand aren't too bad to redo. Better than those guys out there with 200+lbs. The only thing i don't miss about a big tank.....teardown and move day.
