Swiss non-photosynthetic tank

Hi

I'm Patrick and i'm from Switzerland. I've got already three tanks.
A 100L Zeovith SPS tank, a 500L LPS and SPS tank and a 30L zoanthus nano.

Now i'm planning to start a new non-photosynthetic tank. I read a lot about non-photosynthetic corals and about azoo tanks. But i've got a problem. Non-photosynthetic corals are not realy common in Europa. That's the reason why i'm here =)

In my bit tank i've got two species of Tubastreas. A black and a yellow one.

My project:

A 40x40x40 Centimeter Azoo Cube includet a small Algea Refugium. In the Refugium there will be a Jaubert System and a lot of different Algeas.

Light:

A DIY lamp with 4x24W

Wave Makers:

3x 900l/h Hydor Koralia Nano

I will have some sun corals and gorgonians in my tank and maybe a frogfish.

My Questions ;-)

What do you think about my project?
What kinds of Wave Makers do you use for Azoo tanks?
What kinds of Coral Food do you use for your Corals?
Some ideas for improvements?

Hello Patrick,

Sounds like a nice project. I don't think you will need all of that light it is way too much. More of a problem that anything. Nice size for a tank. You may want to get one vortech mp10 or a tunze 6045 or so. More flow the better. 3 nanos might not do so much. It may be ok, if you have the pumps might as well use them. Love the idea of a frogfish. I really wanted one, but was worried about the live food. As for food, I love cyclopeeze and so does my tank. Here are a feed things I currently use.

I like the vortech mp10 also but it's really expensive! I choose the Koralia nono because they've got a really laminare flow. And I thought that the Azoos like that flow?

But i can also take a bigger koralia with 1600l/h or more. Which size would be good?

Ok the most of your food isn't avaiable in Europa. Do you have an online-shop who sell this stuff?

Well Yes the mp10 is expensive. The tunze 6045 or 6025 is really good. around 1100gph nice flow. I have two 6045 and just picked up a mp10. The tunze has a smaller footprint and is very inexpensive.

For food, I'm sure there are several online shops that can fedex the food. be sure to order more than you need in one shot as sometimes the shipping can get expensive. I don't now of any shops, but I'm sure some of the fellow reefers can help.

I'm sure the more experienced azoox keepers will chime in soon, but I'll give you my thoughts based on very limited experience.

If you're just growing azoox corals, the only light you need is what you want for viewing. If they are true azoox corals, there is no reason to light the tank in terms of providing the corals with a proper environment.

Flow is very important. I'm a relative beginner with these corals, but I'm keeping mine i a 151L aquarium that is 91 cm long. In addition to the return flow from the sump (relatively minor flow), I use an MP40 at about half speed. The azoox corals have no trouble dealing with that flow. In fact they respond very well to it. You'll be surprised how much flow they like.

You should be able to get Fauna Marin foods without any difficulty. I feed a mix of Fauna Marin foods, Cyclopeez, rotifers, dry phytoplankton, and a frozen mix designed for feeding corals.

The light will be really blue about 1400K so it's more for viewing not for the coralls.

I will feed with the fauna marin system but I want to know what kind of food the Azoo pros feed.

A Mp10 would be nice but it's too expensive for me. But do you think two tunze 6045 will be enough for my tank?

Thanks, The 6045 might be too much if you have two. You can always get two 6025 and mod it to get more flow. As they put out 600+ gph and the mod steps it up to almost 1100 GPH. I think two would be fine. One pointed up for surface and one pointed through the middle. One thing to think about is the sand, as if you use the small sugar sized sand and high flow it will be a bit messy for a while until thngs settle down. As for flow again. I have two 6045 and one MP10 in a 113L tank-45x30x91 30 gal breeder and everyone loves it. I just move had to position the corals carefully.

ich habe auch mit nem 40er würfel angefangen und 2 900er korallia benutzt... für den anfang net schlecht, aber man will bald mehr...

was willstn genau darin halten?

Es sollen vor allem Gorgonien und tubastreas rein wenn das system funktioniert werde ich mich vieleicht auch mit anspruchsvolleren Tieren versuchen.

The problem is that I want to have black live sand in my tank... If i have to stong current in my tank it would be awful... but the 6025 can be an option. I want minimum 2 pumps because I want to have a varianle current.

i had the 6025 in my tank and it was to much flow for 40cm cubus...


i think menella and tubastrea are no problem in this tanksize... i had mine for 6months with no problems....

about the pumps, im not really shure which ones i should take. Maybe 2 small tunze or 3 coralia nano with 900l/h i will see..

Hello Patrick and welcome to the forum. First and foremost dont worry about the English, we are all family over here, and your English is as good as mine...and it is my first language

Looking at the project you are off to a good start. For the refugium; nothing against Prof. Jaubert, but you can set it up an effective refugium without the plenum. With your overall design of your azoox system, try to keep in mind a few simple factors; lighting is for viewing pleasure, no shortcuts when it comes to flow (check out a Jake Adams articles on Advance Aquarist Online regarding the subject), keep your food menu diverse, have a plan in place to keep your water quality parameters inline, and dont be afraid to experiment.

First thanks at all for your help!

@ Aquabacs, you said that I can start the Refugium without plenum. Should I put a DSB system into the refugium? Or just with 3-4cm sand and algeas?
do you feed just the fauna marin food?

About the fishs in a Azoo thank, my plan is to put a frog fish into the tank because I like them and i don't want a fish who feed the food for the corals... Are there some other Ideas?
