Switching from IO to Reef Crystals?

For some reason I've always been under the impression that switching salt brands in an established tank was a bad idea. Not sure why I think that but the notion must have come from somewhere.

But I'd like to switch to Reef Crystals from Instant Ocean. Seems as if Reef Crystals is simply IO with a few extra trace elements. Can anyone see any problems with making such a switch?

Eric Borneman just read the results of his salt study on saturday @ MACNA. Reef Crystals is the best salt, the RC tank looked the best at the end of the study. The IO tank looked the WORST!! Cyano all over the place, etc. 2nd Best was the new Red Sea RO/DI salt.

So is there any particular problem with changing salts? Obviously it would be a gradual process through many water small changes.

Bumpin- your jumping the gun,
Eric did NOT say what salt was the best or the worst. He showed pictures and your making interpertation based on what you saw. There was little quantitative data, and just because he showed tank filled w/ algae does not mean the critters in those tanks grew.
Remember his hypothesis was which salt was better that allowing the organisms to grow- NOT- which salt was best for reducing cyanoalgae.

I've use other salt, and mixed it half and half with what I was using. I pretty much stick with IO now. Have no plans on changing.

I'm about to do a 50% water change with Oceanic. Then when I startup my 156 RR i'm going to use red sea. I've switched salts before on a 40 gallon and replaced 75% with the new water w/ new type of salt with no negative effects. All sps system.

I think your right. Reef Crystals is just IO with more calcium. I would go ahead and do your change and not worry about it. Especially if your going to do it through water changes.
