swollen impeller magnet

Have you guys seen this before? I bought a used pump off RC and this is what I found when I went to remove the needle wheel.

Just curious how or why this happens.

It looks like something got inside the housing and scratch the magnet like crazy and then caused some corrosion. You should replace it or it might damage the housing of the pump.

I didn't run it. That's how I received it. It looks like it will spin. But i'm afraid to try and run it. I'm waiting on the seller to respond back to me for resolution.

I had a magnet do that to me once. Turned out there was water that got into the sealed magnet and started to oxidize the metal. The magnet was put together in layers (like a tree trunk with the shaft in the center) so it caused the outer layer of magnet to push the sealant coating into the impeller pump housing.

The striations seemed to be caused by the parts of the magnet swelling at different rates.

How did it happen? I assume something harder than the sealant got into the housing and punctured the impeller allowing the water to seep in. It may have been a manufacturing defect as well - who knows?

Anyway, inspect the inside of the magnet housing (pump side) for any damage. If it is good, then get a new impeller and you are good to go. If not, I would not use the pump as any damage to the pump may lead to stray voltage being introduced into your tank.

Either way I would let the seller know about the damage.

I'm waiting to hear back from him. I know he read my last PM requesting a partial refund yesterday. We'll see what he says if anything.

I just wanted to make sure the same thing doesn't happen to my working impeller.

What they all pretty much said. Water got in the magnet which caused corrosion and swelling. Need to replace the magnet.

I had this happen with the magnets on my OM 4 once.

I just replaced one just like this for my sedra. Happens to older impellers...

how do you guys get the swollen magnet out? i have a sedra 5000 with a stuck magnet and ive tried everything short of drilling the darn thing out.
