Syphoning Problem

I've got a new aquarium; have syphoned once, but now the syphon doesn't work, the water is not flowing. Any syphoning tips? The first time the water flew out so fast i didnt have any time to really clean the bottom...today my husband overfed the fish and my syphone wont work at all ...maybe it's broken??? am i doing something wrong? the bucket was below the aquarium, i have no clue what to do...i really with there was a vaccum type of syphone where you could actually have a strong enough flow to remove debris from the substrate, but that wouldn't remove all your water in no time...Although right now there s no suction at all, for whatever reason!
Please HOW DO YOU SYPHON YOUR TANK, do you go all the way to the bottom of the tank, how do you start it ect...

if you stick the whole hose in the water and get all the air out of it, then place your finger over the end of the hose, take that end out of the tank and place it in the bucket. or you can just suck on the end of the hose to get it started

The problem with my syphone is that the water flows out too fast, I have no time to clean out anything...My friend said, with her syphone it creates a whirlpool which slowly pulls the debris up...Nevermind my "stopped flow" problem, turns out there was a valve inside which I opened with a pencil...........................please tell me how should it be so i know what to expect and buy a new more stable syphon, not sure if they have it @ my lfs...........

you may have one that is too large for you tank? do you know what kind it is? and also since you have a valve on it maybe you could open the valve just a little bit untill you get the flow speed you want
