tang choice

Looking to add a small tang to my tank. Please feel free to post suggestions and opinions if you have had tangs. thanks

I really love the duel purpose tangs ie. yellow eye kole, blue eye kole, and tomini (flame fin)..They are excellent algae eaters with their bristle teeth although I assume you are going to want something more flashy like a blue(hippo)..just get a very small juvenile with the idea that eventually you WIll have to upgrade tanks..

120 is even too small for many tangs. 55 imo is too small for all full grown tanks. Make sure you will upgrade before you get one imo.

The one spot foxface is a good alternative (must be the one spot variety)

55 is too small for all tangs. If you plan to upgrade though you do have some options. There are around 5 tangs that would go great in a 120.

These 4 tangs have a minimum of 75 gallon so 120 would be great for them. Plus I am sure they would be good in a 55 for the time being.

You might be able to get away with getting a yellow tang too. As long as you upgrade before it gets too big. I have a yellow tang and I love it. It is my favorite fish so far. They have their own personality and I spend at least an hour a day watching him. Tangs sometimes are dramatic too. Mine is like a drama queen, but it's funny.

I'd actually advise against the yellow tang, possibly, depending on some of your other stocking choices. My experience with YTs is that the can go from 0-100 on the aggression meter in about 5 seconds. Any fish that has a tang-like shape or coloration can be a target.

I'd say no to a yellow or purple -- their attitudes suck.

I have a powder brown that I really like, but he can be a sh!t to new tankmates.

A tomini, as reign suggested would be my choice over the koles, but they're cool, too.

Have you thought about a vlamingi or unicorn? I hear they only grow to the size of their tank... :spin2:

My current fish list is a clownfish, mandarin, and 2 purple firefish. The yellows are cool but i have heard that they have issues with being aggressive. Will look into the tominis and koles. Any thoughts on a scopas?

talk about tangs and their personalities....i got a regal and she is a lil germophob. any lil change she runs n hides next to the fireshrimp for her primping. plus she hides when anyone is near cept me cuz i feed her and if i dont feed her i swear she is like all miss priss on me and shows me her tail for the longest to tell me shes mad at me and if i walk away from the tank shes all up against the glass either saying come back or the classic 'ya better walk away'
many times ive threaten to give her away yet i dont think i could part with her.
oh and man does she poop....alot.

yeah lets get that cute vlamingi and put in our nano!!!
agreed agreed and yes...anything tangy ie yellow, purple, scopas, and sailfin tends to be agro over similar shape and color..unless you have the bucks and massive room to do the school (really cool to see)..I have a hippo(started off as 1" size) and tomini in a 90 gal for the last 4yrs..they are both doing very well..Of course if they both ever need to I will switch them over to a larger aquarium.. I also have a baby kole in a 40 ..he's been in there for a while doing great..I think the big thing is that you do see some tangs as very small juveniles which would be fine for the time being in a modest size aquarium taking into consideration that at some point they may need a larger home

So your saying that I can't put the vlamdingi in my tank with the panther grouper? Lol:lmao:
