Tang for my 120g

Hi all--I am getting a 120g. in the near future and the dimensions are 48" x 24" x 24". It is a mixed reef and I would love to add a tang (never had one before). What are your thoughts on a tang that would be happy in this size tank (it will not be fillled to the brim with liverock--plenty of swimming room). Thanks.

Hey Jena, glad to hear that you are getting a bigger tank.

I personally would stick with one of the Zebrasoma tangs.

Hey Todd, good to hear from you! PM when you have time, I'd love to talk to you more. :) Ok, in layman's terms :D what kind are the Zebromosa tangs?

A yellow tang, tomini tang, or kole tang would be fine in that size tank. Anything else you may want to consult one of the Tang Police, but those are some of the smaller ones I know of.

I will do later tonight, have to go over to the folks place, mom's birthday.

LOL Yellow tang, purple are part of the Zebrasoma family.

You mean one of the smaller Zebrasoma tangs (a sailfin is a zebrasoma too) the tank is only 48" long.

:)

Very good point, those would get too large, thanks.

I love all of the tangs but the three I was considering are a convict (not sure if that's a zebrasoma), a purple, or a plain old yellow one. I've read the purple tangs can be kinda mean, is that true? Although the yellow tangs are common they still are beautiful. I don't know much about the convict tangs.

I've had or still have all those tangs. My purple is a P-cat, does not bother anybody. My yellow is VERY mean :mad2: . He owns the tank. The convict is the most peaceful of the 3, but does grow fairly big.

On paper the purple would be the meanest, the yellow would be next and then the convict. A Kole would be a good tang for 120gal also.

PS--The convict is in the family Acanthurus.

120 is a great size! I have three tangs in mine. Although it may me unorthodox, I have smaller tangs that will be in a 240 next year. They get along well partly due to my aquascaping. I have many crevices for them to hide in, and lots of swimming room.

Thanks, I'm am SO excited about upgrading. I'm buying the set up from a guy here on RC who is WAY COOL!!! :D Because the tank is only 4', I won't get a really large one (I'm leaning towards the yellow tang). I know they aren't uncommon but they are striking and add a very spectacular splash of bright color to an aquarium. And, after listening to everyone I think the yellow would do great in my 120g. Thanks for all of the responses. :)

Thank you very much! I just can't wait till my little colored sticks grow up! I think a yellow tang would be perfect for your new tank. Sorry to hijack your thread with pics. I just figured out how to include pics and thought it might help.
