Tang growth rate

I have a 55g 36" /w 30g sump /w skimmer +refuge /w 20lbs LR & couple lbs of cheato . 40x turnover rate in tank.

Fish list, done.
2x 1.5" & 2" false percs
2x red firefish (they stay in opposite sides of the tank)
1x flame hawkfish 2.5"
1x barlett anthia. 3"

just picked up a blue hippo & yellow tang, both the size of a dime, maybe quarter. Small was the only reason I picked them up.

Considering I up the flow and provide them with good exercise & swimming space. how long until these guys outgrow the tank?

TANG POLICE: Yes, a upgrade is planned, I went from my first 10g cube to a 55g within 2 months of starting the hobby. next upgrade for the 180g is already in the planning stages, however I don't think it'll be done until next year.

Your tangs will be ok for at least a year if they are indeed less than 2"

IMHO I'd say you have 12-18 months max. They little ones seem to double in size every month or so. I'd get cranking on that upgrade but no need to rush it.

Most tangs seem to follow a logarithmic pattern in their growth rate . You will see a very rapid growth rate in their very early first year or two, and will then slow down. It is very important that they have optimal conditions from the very beginning because they will never be able to make up for this time in their growth. They may keep growing after this time but it will be a very small amount.

I read in Gerald R. Allens book on australian fishes that Clown tangs can attain 70% of their full adult size in about a years time. I don't recall the figures for a blue or yellow tang (I think their growth rates are more drawn out) but I have seen them grow considerably over a years time.

You might have 15 months before you have to upgrade. Here's a pic of mine in her 180. I pick her up 1 1/2 months ago she was 3/4" now she is about 1 an half inches. To give you an idea how fast it will grow.

good info, I'll make sure to keep them on a good diet.

The blue tang is my new favorite fish, will hide until another fish swims by then follows him around the tank.

what a cutie. I got a yellow belly hippo at about 1.5 inches. in 6 months he was 6 inches. But i feed a lot.

:eek1: I feed my fish about 2-3x a day. hope he doesn't grow that quick.

whats the maximum size I can house him in the tank before he starts to stress? 3" ?
