Tang ID Please.

Hello. Can some please ID this tang for me?
It was sold to me as Acanthurus coeruleus
(atlantic blue tang) but I am not so sure that
it is. This fish is about 2.5" - 3" long and the
color of it is gray with some minor stripes
running long its side.

this is an adult lavender tang. sometimes they have stripes in the back, but around the face is usually spotted. is this anything like it?

Here's another pic of A nigrofuscus, lavender tang. I think they are more stripey as juveniles, though I am less and less certain that is what you have...

the two small black spots at the back of the dorsal and anal fins are pretty characteristic of this species...

they can be pretty variable in appearance. the first picture is more typical of the species, IMO. I think they have more striping as juveniles. either that, or they can hybridize with kole tangs. I think they are really nice fish, I used to have one.

:eek2: OOHHHH, I like that! Very cool fish!

Looks like the Ctenochaetus striatus I just bought. Maybe a pic with the flash on would help. The LFS got 3 in so maybe the wholesaler got a bunch in. It is also called the orange lined bristletooth or fine lined bristletooth. I have never seen them for sale but always wanted one. Mine was not eating well for about 4 days but now he is a pig and doing great.

It definitely appears to be in the genus Ctenochaetus.

Does it look like the one below at all? Your tank is blue enough that I'm having a difficult time picking out details.

I have seen an atlantic blue tang with almost adult colors and still that small.
Does it look like the ones on <a href="http://www.meerwasser-lexikon.de/eng/5/547/Acanthurus/coeruleus.htm">this page</a>?

Definitely not an atlantic blue tang.

t definitely appears to be in the genus Ctenochaetus.
I agree

I agree if it's eye ring is bright blue it is C. binotatus but it is hard to tell from the pic. But I do not see the two dark spots on the base of the dorsal and anal fin at the tail. Also the tips of the dorsal and anal fins is different (very sharp angle to come back to the caudal base) if that makes sense :)

It looks alot like a Blue Line tang, I have one thats very similar, but all the Ctenochaetus are very similar with just a varation in color, dots, line and color around the eyes. Bunch of them have come in recently, from Bali I think, and they have been listed a Blue tangs and are on the dark side color wise.

It looks very similar to my Blue line tang except the dot near the tail on mine is smaller but I've had my tang for about 12 years or so. All the Ctenochaetus look very similar so it could be just one of the many variations.

I'm going to go with the Ctenochaetus striatus. (AKA Striated surgeonfish/tang)

Here is a picture for you to compare.

The freckle-less checks which isn't the norm for Ctenochaetus of similar appearances is what really makes it stand out. It will be interesting to see if the tail of yours darkens as it ages like the one in the photo.

Well my Blue line tang doesn't have a freckle or spot by it's cheeks, just like in the picture, as a matter of fact you'll see many types of Ctenochaetus with all different color patterns. All of the tangs in the Ctenochaetus have similar color patterns with just variations. What is missing is the spot by the tail.
