this tang ia at a LFS listed as a Naso and every one I ask just says "its a Naso". At first I thought Naso Vlamingi but ive never seen a juvenile Vlamingi with the white band on the tail and lacking spots.

I believe it's a juvenile Ringtail Unicorn Naso (Naso annulatus). Not seen all that often in the hobby, as it can grow quite large (around 3 feet).

I don't know why petco would be selling these. Unless you have a gigundo tank this thing is going to live a miserable life. Wonder if I could buy it and drive it down to the gulf of Mexico and turn it loose if it would survive

If you did that you would be doing more harm than good. A lot of invasive species are showing up in Florida because of this kind of reasoning, including Lionfish. If you can return it to its original habitat (in this case the Indo-Pacific), great, if not maybe find a public aquarium that will take it...

... OR this could be a great excuse for an upgrade! "Well honey, he really needs a 2,000 gallon home." :)
