Hey everyone, I'm in the market for a house here soon and just planning ahead.

I'm buying a 48x48x20 200g cube and cant help but going ahead and get a list of reef only fish.

I currently have a 40G breeder reef tank. The thing im the most excited for is with 200g's I can have tangs!!! :)

In everyone opinion how many tangs could I do and which ones are good for tang newbies?

I'm thinking a few yellows, maybe a Sailfin and a Clown tang. I LOVE clown tangs!

Clowns are real picky eaters and their survival rates are low imo,how about a blue powder or purple?

I am going to say that a clown, sailfin, naso (any in the genus), hippo, and sohal tangs are going to get too big. They really need more of a run to swim than 4ft. You have front to back room covered, but you need more length. I would say most tangs that can be comfortably kept in a 6ft tank (according to the tang tank size sticky), should be okay as well as anything that is able to be kept in shorter (6' or less tanks).

Tangs like those will work well although I would suggest the mole or chevron because they are in the same genus. How about a mimic or convict tang instead?

I like all tangs I just really wanna make sure I pick the ones that will live well together in the space I give them.

The Yellow eye Kole is one of my favorites :)

They should work. Just try to avoid adding more than one of a genus to the tank. It will minimize aggression between them, therefore they should live well together with the space you have.

i vote for the most under rated tang out there the convict.

a nice contrast to most tangs which are boldly colored...it will stand out just like your boldly colored tangs just in a different way

You are getting some good advice here!
With a 4 foot tank, you will want to avoid the strong swimmers (generally most of the Acanthurus types); when confined to a too-small tank, they become aggressive and anxious. The species that we've seen do well in smaller tanks are the Ctenochaetus types like the bristletooths, and don't forget the wonderful chevron!

Thanks for the advice everyone! I looking forward to this tank so much!

Chevron is one of my all time favs so thats a given :)
