I've had several clients in the past few weeks describe some symptoms to me that I couldn't diagnose. All were on tangs (not purchased from me) of different species, all were recently acclimated, up to several weeks in the tank. All seemed to go into mature tanks with proper nutrition.
The tangs all had severely swollen lips that impeded natural eating behavior. All three cases included two white dots on the lip, my theory is swollen pores? The dots are in the same place on both sides of the mouth, symmetrical. One person tried to pull them out. That didn't end well, so I ruled out a parasite. In one case, the dots were not the same size, but that may have been due to reduced swelling on one side. In all cases, the color of the lips was faded. Otherwise, in the early stages, the fish seemed fine. Toward the later stages of this disease, the fish just "tread water" and hide.
I thought white dots may point to Columnaris, but wouldn't that make the dots more random? It just seemed strange to me that all three cases would be so similar, almost identical. Anyone have any idea what it could be?
