tangs for a 90

i was wondering what types of tangs will do well in a 90?
48x18x25, w/skimmer and fuge

i plan to keep
a pair of true percs
a dwarf angel(probably a flame)
a trio of anthias or a school of chromis
and 2 tangs

i really love purple tangs, but i would like to know what others would do fine in this setup?

...A purple will do well and maybe a tomini tang or a cole. But 2 tangs in a 90 may be pushing it

I have a 5" Purple and a 3" Hippo in my 90 right now, and they both are doing great. The hippo will need a 6' tank once it gets bigger but for now they are great...I would say a yellow would be ok for you as well...

i heard if i kept 2 of the same like shape or like type they would fight like if i kept a yellow tang and a purple tang

ohh also how would a sailfin tang do? i really love those tangs

Sailfins are hit or miss. Some people have had great success with sailfins and other tangs... Mine tore the fins off my powder blue the instant it hit the water. I got a purple tang, and it destroyed my bellus angel... so now I have a tennenti tang! Love him!

IMO/IME, none of the fish listed will thrive long term in the confines of a 90 gallon. Many will say that a kole tang is a bit less active and therefore more adaptable to a 4 foot tank. The zebrasomas (yellow/purple/sailfin all grow larger and are extremely active and aggressive, even as juveniles. One of the reasons you almost never see full sized adult specimens in home aquariums is that most succumb to illness or other stress related problems due to confinement in systems that are too small. It's an age old argument that both sides defend to the death. IMO, I would simply not consider any two tangs, and if you opt for one go with a kole or possibly a tomeni.

A convict tang is peaceful and remains "reasonable" in size. I would add the convict first. The purple tang should be the last fish you add.

First thing is, I would only do 1 Tang in a 90 Gallon.

Now that being said.


Purple Tangs work in a 90 but they are probably the most aggressive Tang you can put in there.

A sailfin tang gets WAY to big for a 4 FT tank, they are out of the question due to size.

Convicts I have no experience with unfortunately.

Yellow, Kole, and Tomini are all good fits. The Yellow will need open spaces to swim. The Kole and Tomini will need space as well, but not as much as the Yellow.

Just make sure you structure the rock in such a way to reflect the needs of the Tang you choose to keep.

I added a Kole to my 90 maybe a month ago. Is doing great. Was fine when i first added him but as of late has turned a bit aggressive. It seems to loathe my goby and chases him every time he sees him. Goby hasnt come out of the rock in 3 days. Worried he may be a goner. My blenny also died mysteriously a couple of weeks ago. One day had a large gash on top of his head. Don't know if it was the Kole or not. I guess just be wary. Tangs can be aggressive.
