Tangs in a 200 DD

I understand tank length is more important for tangs, but I want to see what peoples opinions are on the larger tangs (naso, etc) in a 4'x3' tank. I'm leaning towards "not good enough" but just seeing what the experts think. Thanks.

I'm no expert but I had an 8" Naso in a 48"x30" footprint tank and it seemed way too small for him. So I gave him away to a friend with a bigger tank. I would think anything like the purples, yellow, and hippos (as long as they aren't huge) should be fine, but I would personally stay away from the naso's, sohals, and orange shoulders. Good luck!

I agree with the above statement. True, its better to stick with the general rule of 6' of tank minimum for any tang really. Your situation could be an exception for a few of the small - medium species.

Thanks for the input. I'm looking to upgrade and was just wondering about the 200. I guess i'll stick to the orginal plan of a 6' tank. :)

I would not get so concerned about the 6' tank length. My tank is a 4'x4' footprint and on the angle it is nearly 6' long. Personally I think the front to back distance is fair more useful than length (though having both is nice). There are 4 tangs in my tank and they seem to be doing well.

Personally I would buy a deep dimension tank over a standard 180 if you had the option.

I personally think I'm gonna do the 250 DD. Good compromise between a 4' and 6' tank and still can light it easy enough. Guy I know had one with a 4ft 8 bulb T5 fixture and it looked great.

I have a 200DD and I have opted to not keep any of the smaller tangs as they will undoubtedly become aggressive in that size tank. If i were to change my mind, I would consider a Yellow, Purple, Kole, Chevron, etc; definitely not something in the Acanthurus family. The Deep Dimension Tanks are very solid tanks. I am running 8- T5's and it is adequate for the softies and LPS I keep. I may add an additional 2-4 bulbs and try some SPS in the near future.

If this upgrade to a 6' tank is for the naso, don't bother. :spin3: A 6' tank still isn't big enough for these giants. I'd stay away from all of the unicorns - naso, vlamingii, unicorn etc in a 6' tank.
