I bought a lipstick naso the other day at petco and briought it home, I did some tests on my qt tank and the parameters were terrible so i acclimated him to the main tank ( I know I shouldnt have) I went back to pertco the following day and both fish that were in the tank with it were still in there dead. Now the other day I came home and the nasolooked as if it were shedding or peeling and looking terrible, I got it out asap and within hrs it was dead. NOW I have two yellow tangs in the tank and one of them looks like his skin is peeling and breathing heavy.. What is this I cannot find anything on the net! He is eating, should i remove him? are all of my fish going to get this?

You might look over the sticky titled "Brook Time" to see if perhaps that is what is affecting your fish. If so, note that quick treatment is critical.

Sounds fast for Brook 24 hrs? There is something similar to brook but spreads faster starts with an "O" possibly ollium or something like that, it's not as common but if your petco is anything like my petco I wouldn't be suprised to catch it...I shower before I get near my tanks after going to mine, and how that place smells like puppy poo, I just don't understand, mine doesn't even sell puppies?!

But anyway how bad were the parameters in your QT tank? Would it be worth tossing the non peeling ones in the QT if you can catch them now? The Ollium (or something like that) kills fast, I remember reading a thread recently talking about it...the guy is from Canada, has a bunch of posts, his avatar is him infront of a tank, he is active on Paul B's 35 year old reef thread...sorry I read constantly on here, can't remember it all unfortunately.

I think you mean Oodinium (velvet). Velvet & Brooklynella are both very quick killers. Brook spreads as fast as any parasite I know of. The real "tell sign" of brooklynella is peeling or sloughing skin. Oodinium (velvet) infected fish have a filmy, velvet like coating. Its vital to know which one, they need different treatments and either has to be very quickly. IMO & IME, oodinium is more common than usually realized and is often mis-diagnosed as ich.

Yep, that's what I was thinking of! Thank you, for the correction and info.

Thanks guys, I been reading alot of material and I think I tracked it down to that, My last yellow tangs started getting symptoms just like the others and I couldn't catch him. I wasn't sure at the time if it was brook or oodium but i treated the whole tank with melafix and pimafix. I typically do not like adding anything to my tank like that but the yellow looks great again. I also have 4 clowns, a blenny, 3 chromis, six line wrasse, and a blood shrimp. None of them ever showed any signs of being sick. thankfully at least up to this point the medicines have not effected any of my corals or fish in a negative way. I also have airlines going int the tank because I heard horror stories about losing everything because of the medicine depleting oxygen. But for now things look ok but i know looks are decieving

If you can get rid of what ever is in your tank and use a QT on everything from now on; you'll never have to worry about this stuff again. if you continue to stock your tank without using a QT, its just a matter of time before you have a major problem.
I really don't know what caused your problem (not enough info); but if its velvet or brooklynella, neither med you used will have any effect. One is a fungal treatment and the other is an antibiotic. They may help with secondary infections, but won't do anything to parasites.
If your fish losses were due to a parasite, it almost certainly still resides in your tank as part of its normal life cycle; I'd watch fish very closely for several weeks and have some sort of plan to treat it. Velvet & Brooklynella, on the chance that's what you're dealing with, are very deadly, contagious, and persistent parasites.

^^^ +1

Velvet and brooklynella are very deadly as MrTusk said. It's very scary in the sense that usually by the time you spot the symptoms, the fish are already beyond hope. If you have made sure it's velvet or brook, I would really suggest you pull all the fish out into the QT and treat with formalin dip and cupramine, because, again, by the time you see symptoms the fish are usually only hours from death.

melafix and pimafix do absolutely nothing for these two parasites. not sure where you got your info from. copper and formalin are the only effective treatments for velvet and brooklynella, respectively. don't bother with any other medicine as you'd just be wasting your time and losing fish along the way.

I bought the medicines prior to understanding what I am dealing with. Once I realized it maty be brook I was just hoping that if it isnt brook hopefully the medicines will take care of it. I am now skimming the tank heavily to remove what I put in. The fish at the moment at least seem ok. My fingers are crossed!

Carbon will do a much better job at removing meds. There are many meds (probably most) skiimming won't touch, copper is one. Skimming and chemical filtration are two entirely different things; I'd do some research, the info may come in handy if you have an emergency.
