Tank at Children's Hospital

I talked to a co-worker today, and his son goes to the childrens hospital for some special needs care, and he said that this was a great idea because those tanks dont look that great at all.

i wouldnt worry too much about that tank at childrens, i got an inside line on the guy taking care of it, he's working on turing it around

One thing about the tanks at children's is that they aren't where the kids can see them. They are out in the lobbies and waiting rooms where the sick kids aren't going to be to see them.

Wouldn't they see these tanks when they are waiting for there appointment? If we can keep these tanks looking good it will be a welcome distraction for the kids while they wait. I can remember as a kid that it can be a little scary just waiting to get in to see the doc. Kids love fish tanks and it is a shame that they have let them go. I don't buy into the "we are working to turn them around" why did they let them go? why did they put in a bid that would make them take sub par care of the tanks? why now after we decide to take this on is it suddenly "turning around". No matter if it is the service company or the hospitals budget that is causing this I feel that we should offer to do this at no charge to the hospital and offer the care that these tanks need. An in return we will most definetly put a smile on some kids face and maybe make him or her forget for a minute that they are waiting to see a doctor. So lets keep pushing forward.

I completely agree. What that company said is a political response. They are just trying to make it sound better than it is. And some have made us aware how bad it really is.

One otherthing I have to say is that the tank most of you are talking about was in an area that was under construction for over 2 months. My wife has told me that it was very difficult to get into the area, and that there were signs that said to stay out. I wonder if the hospital wouldn't let them clean the tank while the area was under construction. My wife told me that over the last week that the tank looks much better than it had. That it has cleared up a lot compared to what it was before.

that was not a political responce, all of you have had problems with your tanks at one point or another, and how often did you resolve these problems the first, sometimes even the third, time you tackled the situation

Are you affiliated with Reeftechtonics or something? I know you said you had a friend that worked for them.... Why don't they post here to explain the situation instead of leaving it up to you? Just curious....

Seems like if they wanted to be involved in the OMS community, they would make their presence known a little more like Petworld and PC does. Could be that they are involved but I don't know about it...

Regardless, I see this as a way for OMS to make a difference and I applaud any effort to that point. Even if it means RTT loses a customer. Maybe they should have taken the account for free and written it off. Seems like the right thing to do (imo).

Huskerreef, Let me know when you want the bucket of salt. I could probably find some hardware also if any is required (pumps, sumps, lights, etc...)

yes, im affiliated with reef tec., this is Dave. I took this tank over two weeks ago, to get it back into shape, has anyone besides mike gone to see the tank, or is this all based on his opinion. the tank has good equipment on it, euro reef skimmer, 400w halide 2x 65w pc actinics, mag drive return pump ect, there are 3 corals in it when you can see them, a turbinaria reniformis that actually shows good polyp expasion during the day, a happy cynarina sp. and a colt coral that shows excellen t expansion as well, the tank does suffer awful dinoflagellate blooms, which dosent mean that the fish are "sick" or the corals are "unhealthy", i have added an iron oxide phosphate remover, stepped up water changes, an added an extra powerhead for more circulation, hpefully this will ease you minds and let everyone get some sleep again

regardless of what is being done, this still would be a great community project for the marine society. Sorry if we stepped on your toes dave.....you are a society member can we count you in on the volunteer rotation:)

Your hands are no doubt experienced and capable (to the degree that your employer will allow). It is good to hear from you, miss talking with you at the retail places.

The point remains however, this would be a good endeavor for the OMS to explore involvement with, although some discretion should be advised in regards to filling the bodies for a long term effort.

i understand that the tank dosent look its best, but im doing what i can to make it better.I have had two one-hour visits to begin fixing the problems. By the society contacting the hospital, pushing to maintain the tank, you are making a bad situation worse for me. this is a buisness, i may only work for the buisness, but this is how i feed myself. there are certain constraints that i have to keep this tank "healthy" and profitable, so unfortunatly not everything that i want or need to do with it can happen in one day. helping a tank out isnt a bad idea but i think it would be a better idea to find one that isnt a source of livelyhood for someone.

You guys just don't get it do you. Your meddling with this and making a big deal out of it could cost the company that handles the tanks there account with Childrens hospital. It would also be very difficult for you or anyone not affliated with Reeftectonis to do anything to the tanks as all the stands and canopies have locks on them for just this reason. And no I am not affiliated with Reeftectonics. Just like I wasn't affiliated with Animal talk the last time this was asked.

Dave I understand what you are talking about. Unfortunately many here don't. They don't understand that this could cost you your job, they don't understand the monetary/time constraints. They many have good intent, but they are wrong if they think that a Hospital is going to let them come in and start messing with things when they have no insurance, no qualifications other than being hobbiest. What would happen the first time someone from the society made a mistake and everything in the tank was killed? What would happen if something was broken? You can't tell me that nothing would happen, because mistakes happen to the best of us.

Do you disagree with my opinion? My orginal post mentioned absolutly noththing about who or how tank mainatance was being done, all I said was that the tank looks bad. Here is exactly what I said:

Has anyone else seen the tank in the suregery waiting room at Children's Hospital? It looks really bad in my opinion. It is always dirty and the acrylic looks like it was cleaned with sand paper it's so scratched. I have a Special Needs son so we are at Children's on a regular basis so it wasn't a one time thing.

You can take issue with the fact that the OMS is talking about wanting to take care if this tank but I have spoken with you enough times in the last few years at AP and PC to know that you know this tank doesn't look very good. You said you just took it over two weeks ago, when you did was your opinion that things looked great and a weekly water change should keep things in check or was it similar to mine?

I think this has escalated beyond the point of reason.

If the goal is to have the tanks looking better, and Dave is in charge of doing that right now, then they will look better soon.

I think that there are probably other things the society could do, that would more directly impact children.

The club took this quest on with the best of intentions and it has obviously ruffled a feather or two. I know Dave is a capable force to tackle the issue, but losing this account should not cost him his job if he just took on this tank a couple weeks ago. This is not a reflection of Daves abilities but on the ability of the company he now works for. The fact remains that these tanks got to this point and by our bringing it up they will get better. I know people want to cut Reeftechtonics a little slack now that we know Dave is handling this account because he has been a great friend and helper to us all over the years. If the Hospital is happy with how things are going then they will want to keep up with the plan they are on and this will be a non issue. And as far as insurance goes, its only a phone call away. And Dave if this cost you your job, I'll give you one:)

you're my hero Dave!! I know you can do it little trouper! Just hang in there and don't listen to all the bullies out there!!! love joe
p.s. when are you going to post pictures of your bowl??
