Tank bred maxima

Does anyone know the situation regarding wild maxima clam populations and the percent of them that are tank bred. I bought one from my dealer that he got from fiji. He didin't know whether it had been tank bred or not because he said many of the tank bred specimens are bought from those breeding them for food from pacific islands and are then sold to those of us who keep them. It was a tank with about five of all the same size.

They are very commonly farmed, and it's pretty easy to find one marketed as such.

But no use asking if the barn door is open after the cow is already out.

I don't racall any breeding efforts in Fiji for Maximas. Tonga, the Marshall Islands, Bali, Vietnam, etc all breed Maximas though.

THe vast majority of small ones are CB. Many of the larger ones aren't. ONe simple way is to look at the growth on the shell. If there's a ton of fauna/corals/etc growing on it, it's probablu a wild one.

They eat Tridacna clams in indonesia like we eat clams casino over here. The commercial markets over there are doing more to the populations than we ever will. Live rock should worry you more than clams IMO.

On the other side of the coin, we owe the food market credit for starting most the farms we get out farmed tridancas from :) Most are still sent into that market.
