Tank bred orchid dottyback and fairy wrasse

I was wondering if anyone has any experience keeping a tank bred orchid dottyback with fairy wrasses.

I haven't bought either fish yet, just planning out my stocking list. Snorvich said aggression between the two might be a possibility, and I also remember seeing something about that in the fish primer thread. I would like to get an orange-back fairy wrasse. I also plan on getting 3 flasher wrasse as well.

Tank is 180 gallons.

I removed my dotty back since it was being aggressive with my wrasses would chase my rhomboid and yellow tail tamarin wrasse endlessly. I now keep my tank with mostly wrasses

Orchid dottybacks are little devil's they eventually will stock down the wrasse and kill it.
I have experienced this.

Was the dottyback an orchid dotty back, or another species?

I have never had a problem with the rchid dottyback with fairy wrasses and in a 180 I would think there would be no issue.

P. fridmani is the least aggressive dottyback. Many find it works, some find it does not. I think more of the former than the latter in a large tank.

I've kept fridmani with fairy wrasse and the only reason you'd likely come across a problem is if you either added it first, or your tank wasn't suitable for the dotty. By that I mean they need plenty of rockwork and a network of hidey holes in which to explore. It either is lacking they can be more territorial, if they have them, they are more likely to just spend the day hunting pods.

I think dotties get one of the worst reps because people don't understand them or their needs.

In my 125 I have several fairy wrasse with my orchid. I've kept two orchids in 14 years and will always have one in my tanks. Never had an issue.

I really like the coloration of the orchids and how they swim through the rockwork. I have plenty of rock work with holes/caves, so I don't think that would be a problem. I just don't want to count on "getting lucky" with a peaceful orchid.

I'm considering going with a royal gramma instead, to be on the safe side.

you only get unlucky with them. I've only seen conformation of one that was mean, the rest were probably purple dottys, which mostly are very mean.

Yep, orchids are peaceful, but the purple/magenta dottybacks are sometimes mislabeled and they are mean, but they are pretty easy to tell apart.

I have an orchid dottyback that got along or at least tolerated a yellow wrasse (now gone) and is currently tolerating an unknown fairy wrasse (I think a pink margin fairy wrasse). The orchid was definately aggressive the first day the fairy wrasse was introduced, but now every time the orchid seems to get a bit aggressive the fairy wrasse turns right into the orchid and chases it half way around the tank!
