Tank covers

I have a 55g tank and am still new to this hobby. I got a new goby to sift my sand and my LFS said i should keep covers on my tank because they will jump out. My question is will covers affect or hinder beneficial light? I have two 150w mh's and the fish is doing very well.

Many people use egg crates, I believe they are found in the lighting section of a home depot or lowes. I dont have any pictures.

Alot of people dont use covers at all. It depends on your preference and the type of fish.

I leave mine open and everything does fine

I read your Q wrong. If you did want a cover the egg crate will let plenty of light through.

I dont use a cover either so im just gonna stop typing now

I'll give it a shot with no covers. Hopefully my goby won't go skydiving. Thanks
