Tank design feedback wanted

Ok,
Here is my thought..
What if I took a 180 gallon and drilled a bulkhead midway into the side. Plumb it with very short plumbing straight into a custom make tank next to it with the same dimensions just not the same length. The side tank would be a fuge with a split a return to it. This would give me more space in my stand and such. Does anyone see a negative to this? Would aesthetics be an issue? I could take it as far as to have a split in the canopy with its own lighting over the fuge. Block of the lighting and such to the main tank to run light on an opposite schedule. Maybe a 2 foot addon fuge and custom make a 8 foot stand and canopy? I was thinking the pods might be able to make it to the display without the chance of dicing and killing of a return pump.

Do you think it would be too much work? With no added return in benefits? I met a great guy named Dave who goes by hohmfree on RC. I got an acrylic 5 foot 65 gallon tank for a sump for him. So my sump will have plenty of room.. I think.. A great guy who seems very busy as he is in the car business like me. He even use to run a aquarium maintenance company in Atlanta before moving to here. Hint .. Hint Dave visit the forum sometime! Introduce yourself!

In the end should I ditch the custom fuge idea and make room for it in my sump?

Put it into paint or something so people can see what you are describing.

Might be clear but I still havnt had my coffee yet either :P

I don't think you'd get enough flow from your fuge into your tank with just a single bulkhead. Also, it sounds like all flow between the two tanks would be passive -- unless the display drains to a sump below and the return flow is pumped to the fuge. If that is the case, you'll have to account for the fuge volume above the siphon-break point in designing any overflow capacity in the sump, which might limit the amount of water you can have in there (height of baffles). Also, if the flow through the bulkhead was ever blocked or restricted (chaeto, snails, other algae), you'd have a huge overflow on your hands.
