tank maintenance opinion

I had a red cyano outbreak sometime back and the remedy, which was recommended to me, was to use a turkey baster and churn the sand bed (about 1 1/2 inch) every so often. It turned some pretty black stuff and clouded the tank really bad the first couple of times I tried it. Gradually though, the tank cleared the Cyano and things got better.
I have continued to use the baster since then. I am wondering if this is a good practice or not. It looks like the my growth of coralline algae has been restarted, I'm not sure if this is from the baster or its just recovering from the outbreak.
I have a canister filter, and i have noticed that the micron filters stay cleaner. i also notice that a settling film covers all the rock and that I have to wait uni till the tank completely clears then blow all the rocks clear of the settlement.

You will get opinions from both sides of the fence..some disturb the sand bed...others don't touch it...both have shown plenty of success stories..

I will forever keep a Diamond Goby in my tank. They stir up the sand so well. I had cyano, would clean it out, and it would just grow back. One time I decided to get a Diamond Goby, so I cleaned out the cyano, introduced the diamond goby hours later, and it hasnt grown back since.
