I have access to 1/2 - 1 inch acrylic sheet 4-Freeee. anyhow i was going to build a 10-15 gallon tank for a future mantis shrimp. would 1/2 inch be good enough? it wont crack through that would it?
1/2"!! There isn't much on the planet that could split that, much less a mantis.
I wouldn't worry about the glass either. If it split the glass I'd be more worried about 10-15 gallons of salt water on my floor than the shrimp. Dr. Ron could probably tell you better, but my thought would be as long as it's still moist, it would be ok. Consider that many are hitchikers on live rock, and that rock isn't always submerged in transit.
I'm setting up a tank for an O.S. Mantis using 1/2" lexan and 1/4" lexan.
It'll be a 15 gal tank with a 5 gal refugium built into the back half. I'm going to put in a 3 or 4 inch crushed coral substrate with a black PVC pipe network under the sand.
5-10 #'s of LR an overflow to the refugium on the back with a RIO 1100 returning the water to the main tank. The divider between the main tank and refugium will have a sheet of black acrylic weld-on to it. The refugium will serve as a holding area for snails and crabs until theyre ready for consumption and feather caulerpa will suck the nitrates out of the water
The overflow from the main tank will be on the left side and flow into a chamber with bio balls. The bioballs will be set up such that a bubbler will keep the balls in contact with air.
Phew, that was a little disorganized. I hope the pic clears it up. It's a crappy sketch. I'll add more pics as I start cutting and putting the tank together.
