Tank Raised Blue Tangs

I'm assuming it was born in captivity, that's usually what tank raised refers to.

Actually, I'll bet it was captured close to settlement then raised in captivity from there. As far as I know no one has gotten any tang larvae past meta in captivity...

That's what I thought. I guess it's better than freshly wild caught, even if they weren't born in captivity.

I was wonding about these as well, they are not listed from what I can tell on the SA website. It says tank raised, not tank bred or something similar, which makes me think they were caught very small and raised from there, which I would argue is better for the wild population, since smaller fish are less likely to make it to adults anyways, but that is debatable.

This was being done by C-Quest (I bleieve) in Puerto Rico a while ago, but hasnt been done in a while, as far as I know.

I asked that question today. My LFS got a bunch in from SA. They told me they were caught as tiny fry & have been grown out in a holding facility since then.

Yup, just grown out. Probably attracted with a light at night or something. I don't think anyone is raising tangs, and anyone who wants to try is going to have to be very dedicated because the larval stage is sooo long. They tried raising tangs in hawaii a while back without success and I don't see it happening anytime soon but who knows.

most likely collected as a larval settlement. Then raised to sellable size in a tank- so technically tank raised.

Yeah, they also have some of the smallest and most delicate pro larvae in reef fishes.
