tank-raised Clown triggers

Their up the road from where I live. From what I understand they are purchasing juvenile triggers and tangs, growing them out and calling them tank raised, not captive bred. Its a fine loop hole in terminology. If someone proves me wrong then I am wrong, but if you go to the SA web sight there is no mention of anything but clown fish. I would think that if they were truly breeding triggers and tangs they would be blasting it all over the hobby. Wish it were true though, I hope someday all my stock will come from a breeder.

Yes, But these have been in captivity since they were very, very small. The same with the blue hippo tang. Aquarium life is all they know, and are use to commercial foods ect. So in a sense they are tank-raised. Here's some info i dug up on them.
"These fish have an incredibly high survival rate during the sale and shipping process. They are collected from the wild from post-larval swarms. Collecting them at that size is very ecologically-friendly, as the smaller fish have a low survival rate in nature and collecting them at that size to be completely tank raised gives them a very high survival rate. This leaves more of the larger, survivor fish in the ocean rather than being collected. During the months these fish are tank raised before being sold, the fish are socialized which makes them stress far less when they are introduced to the home aquarium."

I agree that it is a good idea to take from the post larval stage, as most of those fish end up as food anyway, and the small numbers they are taking probably will have no negative effect on the food web anyway. Saves the larger ones to stay in the oceans and makes it a little easier for us to get them at home. I love my Clown Trigger, he's my favorite fish outside of my Volitan. I hope one day we can figure out a way to breed them though.

Sorry but that is not true. They had to live in the ocean, eat, etc to get to post larval size.

I've been watching this stuff way before SS was even an idea in Matt's head. SI has been shipping this stuff for years, C-Quest used to receive it. There was also another outift, EcoMay that was doing this.

clown triggers ?

I got a really small one, cant understand why ppl would want captive raised ones :S they all eat like crazy lol

Re-read post, I know they've been in the ocean, but have been tank-raised since they were very small. Post-laval is pre-juv stage. I should have said that they are use to the aquarium/prepared foods more than wild juv fish would be.

My point is tank raised used to mean that they were born in captivity. People out there think that they have started breeding them and the vendors don't correct the clients. Its a great idea but seems shady the way its marketed. If you follow that link it has another link to an article about the Boston aquarium breeding some queen triggers. Its misleading. By the way the Boston aquarium is awesome if anyone gets the chance. I got a guy to take me behind the scenes a couple of years ago and they have some cool experiments hiding back behind the one reef display. Just start naming corals that don't have signs and the workers will get impressed and let you back there.
