Tank seal & Over flow DIY

Here is a project I finished up and figured it would make a good thread for the club. The tank is going to turn into a refugium in the new system I am working on starting. This is a 38 gal. tank that sprang a leak on me a little over a year ago.

First I used a lot of razor bledes to got out all of the old silicone. One of the thing I learned while doing this project is even when it looked like the silicone was gone if I scraped the razor across it a thin film would come up. Then I used denatured alcohol to clean the glass(found at HD).

the cleaned glass, the first pic has the hole I drilled.

Then I used blue painters tape to tape it off. I measures 1/2" away from the glass and marked it with a sharpie on the outside (it can be cleaned off later with the denatured alcohol)

This side is taped for the overflow.

This is the silicone I used ge silicone I for doors and windows

I cut a plastic spalatula for auto body work(walmart) and a plastic paint scraper to make the fillets of silicone.

Silicone can stink bad and make your eyes water so make sure you are in a welll ventiliated area.

The finished product.

Yeah....curious about the overflow(?).....so the inverted 90 is where the water comes in (from sump?) - fills overflow, spills into refuge, rises, and exits how/where?

That is where the water is going to exit. This is going to be in the cellar and will be plumed from the top. It will be feed from an independent feed from the tank, that I will be able to control with a gate valve. Then it will empty into the sump. My plans right now are to have 3 pipes running from the main tank. One for the sump, it will be the biggest, one to the refugium abd one to gravity feed the skimmer( wait till you see that build up).

Thanks for the compliment Tony, with this tank there will be many issues to come every thing will be DIY.

With all the great projects your doing we may have to call you Bob Villa and give you your own 1/2 hr show in the forums
Great job

Ahhhhhhhhhh!

Yeah- 1 pump to do the job of 2! that will save a fair amount of juice.

That one of the things I like about gravity feeding everything.
