I'm consructing a new stand for my tank and was wondering if its best to have the stand on feet or on a large bace? I am in an apartment and would like to keep vibrations into the floor at a minimum.
I have had tanks in apartments without a problem. they were between 30-60 gallons. Maybe having something larger would be a problem, but i mean how heavy is a refrigerator or your bathtub?
I would say use a solid base. having individual legs gives you a risk of torsion which could collapse on it self. But it really depends on the size of the tank and the types of bracing you are going to use. More deets.
The tanks 48"X18"X15" with a 30"x16"x12" sump on the stand showen.
As for the weight I have a Deep sided claw foot bath that holds more water on the same floor. Plus the tank is in a gap thats 64" between to load supporting walls.
depends on your skill level ... if you are a number one bad to the bone - - i'd go with feet. it looks better. however, if you're testing out the new dremel ma bought ya last Christmas and you're only borrowing a router ... you know.
If you have that much vibration to transfer, you may want to rethink your equipment.
Regardless, the more surface contact with the floor, the more the load is distributed across the floor. I would be worried about the point loads of the four feet in a dynamic load situation and if the feed would hold.
You can mimick the look of a claw foot with an add on faux at the corners.
Given the photo in your post it looks like the ends of 2x4's will be the feet. That's quite a bit of surface area...no worries about damage to the floor. I have a 65 gal on feet (you can see photos of the stand in my gallery) with out any problems. Given the weight of your system I think either option would be fine.
