tank status: the effects of non reefers... time to get honest

So I am just thinking out loud here....might get long winded.

I have come to the realization that i have got a SERIOUS amount of work to do. My tank is ugh... And that is the effect of having it as a bachelor decoration to all the uninitiated who's jaws drop when they see a cleaner shrimp dart out for food or are amazed at how the xenia actually pulses and "those are all animals like jellyfish stuck to the bottom". They all think it is the coolest thing ever. But that's not what I see... and would be embarrassed to have anyone with a trained eye see the tank.

Status: all fish healthy, LPS healthy (ttorch :), SPS hanging on - poor growth, poor color.

I have SLACKED with water changes... not only because it's easy to be rationalized by the uninitiated but also because my canopy is a PITA to take off and put back on... but A month ago I kind of figured out a way to get it off and on by myself.

problems: vermetids, algae, detritus, out of control xenia and GSP.

plan: this is going to be day after day labor intensive. day after day i need to feed so I know where those damn spider webs are, superglue their holes for a bit, try to pry some of the GSP off the rocks or xenia then toothbrush the rock.
side note: the vermetids are more of a nuisance than the net tells us they are, their spiderwebs come out and the reel PART of them back in leaving the webs draped all over the rocks then I scrape the glass and feedings and general stuff in the water column. Over a year leaving the rocks coated with an algaeish detritus that wont blow off with a baster. UGLY and can't grow calcareous bc the rocks are coated.
anyway after toothbrush the rock water change.
Repeat day after day until there is no noticable xenia or GSP or detrital layer left on the rock. For the final step somewhere in here I will siphon out the small layer of sand that has got to be full of crap and replace with two bags of live sand (hate BB)

FInally i have a new sump, up until now I have had NO mechanical filtration in my little sump that was smaller than a ten gallon, I am happy to have a real sump again. I have to get a REAL skimmer. I am thinking that I am gonna go for the octopus 160. up until now I had a little CPR with the maxi jet. Works but woefully inadequate.

I like my stack, and all my stuff is used to it and or attached to it.. but I have also had more stable stacks.. so I know that with all this messing around at any minute I may have a collapse and be at square one.

theres the vent.. lol.

Yeah PITA..... the irony of all of this is that for the past three years all my numbers have checked out perfectly. No3 zero. Po4 0-1 ppm, ca perfect. There is nothing that eats these damn vermatids that wont first eat all my other coral.

Tank work is so much fun though!! I feel your pain though. If you need a place to dump the xenia or GSP I will take them off your hands!! Just a thought.

Rock stack just collapsed. Ugh. Well half of it at least. Dunno if I should just hit restart since I have a low bioload or attemp to put the half collapsed section back.

Well I almost got it back the way it was because as we all know its against the laws of nature to be able to get a fallen rock stack back exactly the way it was. Still debating and whether to do a scrub and complete overhaul.

Day 3 of spring cleaning... the vermetids STINK!!

Holy six hours of straight labor!! Im having a beer. Ita so much easier setting up a new tank than bringing back an older one esp if your trying not to completely reboot. I have two more of these days before. I could have filled a gallon milk jug with valonia. At least at that point ill have the right equip for the first time in six years. Ill post a progress pic tomorrow when things clear.

I like the stack! What an amazing amount of effort! Great job. You definately deserve that beer!

Yeah man not trying to mess with the stack too much is whats making this more pita. Hopefully it will be worth it. I had to change a couple things but still the same for the most part.

I agree 100% on hating essentially redoing a tank!! I bought my whole set up used and had no idea how much time and effort went into cleaning everything up first. It was well worth it for me. Your tank looks pretty sick with that big stack on the left there too!!

Thanks man... keep in mind thats the before pic. But since that stack has been up for almost three years i didnt want to mess with it and cause a cycle.

After about six hours of toothbrush time. And a hundred trips up and down the stairs to unclog a volonia choked python

Still got a little ways to go. Skimmer comes wednesday... add a tang either yellow or kole more toothbrush time and siphon out amd add new live sand? Recommendations on tang?

That tank needs a volitans lionfish. Lionfish in a reef setting look amazing, it also wont bother your foxface.

Nice tank! I really like the rock scape.

Haha lionfish will eat every except maybe the foxface. And the powder tangs are bullies anterrible algae eaters. At this point there is no free rent in my tank. So its a question of which fish will be the best at working off their rent. Always used to go with a zebrasoma but im thinking bristletooth this time. Kole or tomini. Chevron would be mint but they usually carry a heavy price tag.

I'm loving the tank, especially the way the right side is stacked :) It's a PITA when you're redoing a tank, but the results are totally worth it!!!!

New skimmer!!! :-)

New skimmer!!! :-)

O.k. so based on peoples recommendations i got the super reef octo 2000. Holy mammoth!!!!! Jeez! I am pretty sure that i am way overskimming my tank. My stock is like yhis. 1 foxface. 2 green chromis. 1 firefish. 1 cleaner shrimp. 4 sizable torchfroghammers. And scattered frags sps gsp. 1 cube of mysis a day. This skimmer is more than i expected. I think i am safe with making some additions to the tank at this point...slowly of course. With this big of a skimmer and this light of a bioload i am barely making any foam. Water is perfect.
