Tank Swap Question

I have a 29g fish/softie display tank with a 10g refugium above it. I want to get the pump out of the display tank and hide the fuge so I recently bought a new 29, drilled it and installed an overflow. I also built a 20g sump/fuge to go in the bottom of the cabinet.

My question about making the swap is concerning the sand. I have a shallow layer in the main tank and a dsb in the refugium. Am I risking a big nitrate spike by trying to move the sand? Would new sand be a better approach, or is that just inviting more prolems?

I moved my 75 with sump across town about two months ago and reused the old sand and had no casualties but my sand was only about a year old. If your sand hasn't been in your system for too long of a period I think that you will be ok.
