tank temp

With it being so hot lately my tank has been getting up to almost 82 on a daily basis. What is the max temp for a reef tank that you suggest. I can't afford a chiller so don't recommend that please.

That's fine Jeff.. 85-86* is starting to push it. If you can keep it in the 80-82 range that is ok. Perhaps a small personal fan added over the sump that comes on with the day lights would help.

awesome, I was so worried that I have been putting ziplocs containers full of ice in the sump to lower the temp but it didn't seem to help, thanks for the response Carol.

I agree with Carole. My tank was going over 84 daily. But recently I added a fan that blows across the top and also had a new AC duct put in right above the tank :D Now it varies throughout the day from a low of 81 to a high of 82.

I came back from a trip and found the tank at 87....found some computer fans I had lying around, wired them up and 1 1/2 days later the tank was down to 70-81 degrees.

Evaporation will increase if you add fans, but it's much cheaper than a chiller!!

The fans should help as Carole suggested. It's more important at this point to make sure you don't have large temp swings. Try to maintain about 2 degrees from highest to lowest. Gl, Marcye

I found another thermometer and put it in and realized the other one is off by about 2 degrees so my tank is actually about 80.

First it was a false alarm for ich...now this..Will you stop mothering your tank..LOL:D

yea well now the ich is back too, so I got a cleaner shrimp and I am trying to fix the problems so I have been paying close attention to everything

Mine is always 80 to 81 and ocasionally 82. I've had it 86 last summer but now have 0 issues. I bought a new thermostat that works unlike my old mercury one so now my house stays cooler too.

Have you considered running a UV unit? Ick has a free floating phase AFAIK that would be killed by a UV sterilizer.

i stay betweeb 78-79 at night and 82-84 during the day with the fans on, it evoporates a lot, 10 gallons a week roughly

Mine was 84, I ran down to Radio Shack and put a 4" Ac Cooling fan.. put in over my Refuge let it run 24/7 and my tank gets down to 73 up to 76. 20 bucks couldn't beet it.

And it kills beneficial organisms too.:eek1:
The never ending argument... to UV or not to UV. There are many examples of great tanks with and without it. I would not recommend putting it between your refugium and your display though :)

I have a UV I jsut don't know how to use it. Also RDMPE is that a Starry blenny in your avatar, I just bought one he is cool
