tank temp

78-79 ..... if temp > or = 80 rK2 turns on the fans ... if temp < or = 77 heater comes on ... my tank is open topped though so evaporation changes my temp within a few degrees all day with a/c on inside the house

will a spike in temp cause SPS to bleach? My skimmer pump overheated last night and the only casualty was a SPS frag that Glitzyone gave me. When I noticed the frag had suddenly turned stark white, I also noticed my temp at over 85 degrees. I started looking for the cause of the spike and decided it was the skimmer so I shut it down and turned on some fans to draw more cold air into the tank. Today everything else looks fine but I just wanted to be sure it was the spike that caused the SPS to bleach or do I have more than one problem going on ? My parameters are fine .I have added several more frags this last few days so compatibility may be in question too ...although nothing was too near the SPS.

Overheating can definitely have an ill effect on corals...pair that with the fact that it just got moved several times...from the frag's home to a bag...to the frag swap...to your house. That is a lot of different water to go through in a short period of time.

I try for 80 +/- a degree or two. The little tank runs about 78. It's not that I think one is better than the other, it's just that for each tank that's the temp that seems to work with the lights, pumps and other heat factors to stay the most consistent.
