I'm sure there have been a lot of threads on this, but I thought I would start another . Is there any clear eggcrate or something along those lines? Will the white eggcrate block tons of light? I am planning on a few wrasses and won't have a hood so I think something is a must. I will be keeping sps etc in the tank...

You can get some clear light diffuser at Home Depot and then just cut it down to size.

I use white light diffuser and I don't have any problems with it blocking out too much light. I imagine clear would be even less so. Go take a look at it, buy a panel and test it out to see how little light you lose. I was going to get the clear diffuser, but they were out of it and I had a Flasher Wrasse coming, so I didn't want to take any chances with an open top until it came in. Maybe I should go tonight, it's on the way home, plus I want to pick up another timer for my actinics, thanks for reminding me. lol Post what you decide to try out.

When you say the clear diffuser are you talking about clear eggcrate or the solid diffuser?

I can't put anything flat on my tank or it traps the heat, as I have a behind the wall system in a closet. I experimented with eggcrate as I would like to add a wrasse, but did notice a drop in the light and the fish went hiding for a day. I did see on another thread that Masterswimmer had a good set up where he put the eggcrate vertical and created a wall. Another reply said she heard of a wrasse jumping 11 inches, and I have 22 exposed inside one one side. I guess it'll be an even foot.

I went to Home Depot, but they moved all of their stuff and the people working there don't know anything about where it was put, so I didn't get any. But yeah, I have seen it in clear at Home Depot. It was a bit more expensive than the white, but whatever you do, don't get the chrome because if the chrome plating stuff chips and falls into your aquarium, who knows what could happen. The white and clear don't have any coatings so they're safe to use. The egg crate also comes in different sized squares, mine is 1/2 inch squares, large enough that it doesn't block out light or cause air exchange problems, but small enough to keep my fish where they belong lol

I had eggcrate but it does block some light plus a pain in the butt to move around. I switched to netting that is used to cover koi ponds. Stretch it out, cut to size and use lillte clamps from HD to keep it tight and away from the lights. Works great for me in keeping my 8 wrasses in.
