Tank transfer help

Yes, that makes sense now, thanks for clarifying. My quote about the 78 hours is actually irrelevant since that was referring to the minimum amount of time ich lives on the fish, my mistake. The article doesn’t give a minimum time in hours that the tomont takes to get from encysting on the hard surface to hatching, it just says it takes at least 3 days but usually at least 4 days. So it totally makes sense to say 72 hours between transfers. But the time of day to transfer is not important.

Do you think if one of us wrote a post with straightforward instructions for TTM they would make it a sticky? I just want it to be easier for people to understand and not so ambiguous. Because I am so glad I started using it instead of copper. I haven’t lost a fish in QT since I started doing TTM. And once I got used to the process it’s not that hard and totally worth the time.

I have thought about the new sticky point as well. I think it is best for a group of people to write/edit it to get all the relevant points made and in as short of sentences/paragraphs as possible, before it gets posted. There always is something not mentioned (whether important or just good to know/consider) in a write-up it seems. Many people WAY over think TTM, IMO/E.

Personally I think it would be great to have a post with straightforward instructions and not have to read through hundreds of posts to get the general idea of what you're supposed to do

The 72 hours isnt related to the trophont stage, it is related to the tomont stage. The 12 days part is sourced from the trophont stage.

Both numbers are ambiguous and chosen merely to ensure that:
(a) you allow ample time for all trophonts to jump off the fish - all should in 7 days, but we keep at it for 12 days anyway, and
(b) you transfer the fish well before tomonts hatch releasing more theronts - we do transfers every 72 hours or less when in reality you have well over 80 hours before you are at risk; with 5 days (120 hours) being the most likely amount of time. 72 hours is also much easier to plan for than something in between 72 and 96.

Point being, the numbers we go by are way overly cautious, for the point being to make this a true fool-proof procedure. Of course the other variable is the cleaning and drying process.

+1

The 72-period is the minimum period for tomont excystment. We do multiple transfers to ensure there are no protomonts OR tomonts by the end of the treatment period.

My opinion is that the sterilization process is much more critical to success with TTM. Even if you did transfer a theront early on, or a protomont at some point, both would be eliminated after 12 days. I even do an extra transfer for some fish (like my Kole tang, for example).
