Are there large cost differances to tanks vs in wall with glass front with maybe open top into a first floor room like a pool from first floor with alook into in the bsmt. Wanting to upgrade from 550 system now but checking options cost and look with the maintenance issues also. Can use your opinions and ideas.

It sounds wonderful aesthetically to have a open pool, with a viewing pane on a level below, but I would think that the issues associated with the open pool would be numerous and challenging. Contamination, safety, and other concerns would be significant. I can think of one recent tank posted here that did something similar with an outdoor-exposed pool and a basement viewing pane. Clearly that wouldn't be an option where you live unless you used a sun-room approach and were well climate-controlled.

Anything this big would require being isolated from the house and have its own dedicated HVAC system due to the enormous humidity issues it would present. It would be like having an indoor swimming pool. You would also have issues with the weight of the water on the foundations. You would be best to hire a structural engineer to make sure it is built safely and that all building code issues are dealt with.

Here is another tank on RC that may be along the lines you are thinking of. Note the foundation issues they ran into due to local flooding. There are lots of things to consider with a project this big.
