Target feeding clams

Is it necessary to target feed clams? Right now I have two crocea clams that I feed by dosing the tank with DTs. I put about three tablespoons in daily.

They seem to be doing fine. They have been in for about three months.

Should I be doing something differently?

Thanks,

Target feeding is a hit and miss, it depends on the size and verity of clam you are feeding, and what you are feeding it. Under 3” it is generally considered a good idea to (target) feed, after that most clams rely on there zooanthellae for food energy. In addition, clams cannot consume foods over 50 microns and most are carnivores not herbivores. If you use the correct foods in a higher concentration, you will not need to (target) feed. PM myself or Deuce67 about a food I turned him onto, he is very impressed.

haha its like crack for corals and clams!!!! i got some from him and my clams pump like crazy and there is no need to target feed them. I just feed my entire tank and everything loves it!!!!

Hey krafty, I just got that new book about clams, and they say that they can get, and in most cases get too much of, what they need just from light, and they also say that direct feeding is more stressful then useful.

If you do feed them, just put it in the water and let it works it's way to the clam naturally so that it does not close up from the focus feeding some might do. If you want to read that book sometime let me know. You will learn more about clams then you ever want to.

Yeah, i would borrow that book from you. I got a third one from tom. I havent seen my clams pump like crazy with the food I got from scott. I put about 1.5 teaspoons in my 125gal. But like I said, they look healthy.
