TBS for over a year

I know that most people who get "the package" from TBS are pleased,but I've done a lot of reading here and have found a few people complain. I'm concerned w/the possibility of the rock being too dense or not porous enough hence it's not as good at filtration? Also some people said after time most of the life has died off in time leaving them w/heavy "boulders" in the tank. I'm not trying to bash TBS at all,right now I'm still leaning towards making my purchase from them.It's just that if I am going to make a major purchase I am going to cover every angle first. Sooo... I would like to hear from those of you who have TBS for a year or more and what do you think about it now. I really don't care to hear about the cost of shipping because in my mind it's worth it to pay for the water if it helps keep the live rock alive UNLESS the life is going to die off eventually anyway which is why I want to hear from those who have had time to know. I've had my TB rock for almost 2 years now and I still get the "Oh my GAWD where did you get that rock!" from folks who are only used to seeing the LFS crap. Sure most of the sponges (acutally a couple remain including one cool encrusting sponge remains) and tunicates have died off but a lot of the life remains. Most all of the bivalves are still alive, as well as all the cool hitchikers! And all the different corallines have exploded, the rock came loaded with dark purple, maroon and pink coralline algaes that has just took off.
As far as the rock becoming dense, I haven't noticed it yet. The rock I got had lots of nooks and crannies and was very pourous. I have heard of other getting not so porous rock but that was not my case. In fact, the unique shapes and sizes of the rock was one of the things I like best. Lots of shapes that lend themselves to building caves and the like.
I think my choice of live rock was one of the best choices for my reef I have ever made.
 
Do a search in this forum for a post by (I think) PRC, who reported his experience after > 1 year. He's also very happy.

My TBS experience lasted about 7 months. All of the sponges, tunicates and other colorful fauna eventually died or was eaten. IMO the rocks are ugly but the life you get at first makes up for it.

well I have to disagree, I've had my first part of the package for about a month now, and I have two pieces that are VERY VERY pourous, they look really really good...The life on it is freakin' crazy man...I've had some problems with my nitrites, but that's not TBS's fault...so if I were you, I'd get it...Without a doubt...
 
This is starting to worry me: only one person has stated that have had TBS for over a year and are happy...and they dont have any pics!!! :(

i would also ask what people did for a feeding regiment, water changed and dosing\additives so you can better get a picture and also give you a better idea of what works.

as well if they could give an acurate id of what critters/fish releaved them of sponges or what not. tangs will eat certain sponges but not all in my experience.

in my experience sponges turnicates bivales clams etc need to be fed phytoplankton and if you dont supply this as food they will die.
just like everything else in the tank they have needs.
 
noobie nemo I know that you are happy w/your liverock and that it looks great, almost EVERYONE is happy with it at 1st. As the post reads: people with "TBS for over a year" Not trying to be rude at all, it's just that I don't want the thread to get over run w/new "packages" when we all know how those are and look. I'm concerned with what every person that spends that much should be concerned about: Long Term :)
 
well you said you wanted pics, I do think that this rock will stay porous a year from now...Unless it's from some other planet and regenerates ;-)! I'm tired, I just skimmed over this post by you, I had to drive to Chapel Hill today and back...forgive me

Yea, I read it,and about a gazillion more using the search function. Unfortunately it will not search for those who have had it over a year. So... I've found one person who's happy w/no pics and one person who I am told has a post "somewhere" out there.All others are either people who haven't had the package long to enough to know if they are going to be happy down the road or those who have and are NOT happy.That's why I'm posting this thread.

good point!I never thought of that.So what's the big deal w/it being or not being porous? I understand the weight concerns but now you got me wondering about the porous part.See, I told you there was a reason for your posting here :)

But before you said "I'm concerned w/the possibility of the rock being too dense or not porous enough hence it's not as good at filtration?" so I guess your second statement answers your first....your first post you said that you are concerned with it being porous...now you're saying what's the big deal with it being or not being porous....????I don't get it....
 
Right. I was concerned because of all the negative posts I've read stating that it wasn't porous enough but then you made the point that it's not going to stay porous (if I understood correctly) so now I'm wondering why did I read those posts of people complaining about it being porous or not if in the end none of it remains porous.
 
I just reread my last post and realized that it has got to be the most confusing statement ever posted on RC. I am not challenging what you said or being sarcastic. I was always concerned about the posts that I have read where people complained about the rock not being porous enough. Then you made a good point (if I am understanding you correctly) that all live rock will not be porous over time.So that made me wonder why there is so much fuss over the subject to begin with.
 
never mind I read your post again and realized that you said it will remain porous NOT lose it's porousnes(SP?)
