TBS Rock Experience

Ok, I thought I'd post :)

After a few years of getting rock the old way, I decided to try TBS rock.

I ordered 30lbs for a small oceanic tank, that I was going to mix with about 15lbs of pre-cured (been in a tank over a year) Kaelini rock.

Well, TBS got the rock out, without a hitch, it was at my airport the same day I ordered it, needless to say I was impressed by that!

So we get the rock home, seperated out the crabs that were loose in the box, and begin 'scaping.

Now, I didn't get the package from them because I already had some rock, and about 2" of a mix of live & Active sand.

Well, I didn't get a mantis, which I was disapointed, we had plans for it in a small nano setup :(

All in all my experience with TBS is a good one. After using Fiji, Tonga, and Kaelini, I have to say I am not sure which is better, all I know is that the TBS stuff is DEFINATLY different and more alive, not sure if it will be as colorful as Kaelini but time will tell :)

I do have the nighttime clicks, but so far, no source has been found as of yet.

I do have to say, this chicken liver sponge or whatever it is, is possibly the NASTIEST looking thing I have ever seen, scrubbing it off is almost impossible. Hopefully it will die and be easier to remove :mixed:

So far, as of about 4 days, all my levels are still negotiable, and ph is holding steady at 8.3, this could be because of the previously cycled rock and sand, but I still test just to be sure.

For a small shop, TBS does a great job. I will definatly be ordering more rock from them in the near future.

So my question is, should I worry about the clicking? It seems to happen only at lights out. I've been looking and looking for a pistol or a mantis, since its a small tank it should be easy to spot, any advice?

my buddy found his by doing this: 1 or 2 hours after lights out he droped in a shrimp that was cut into 4 pieces right at the front of the tank and had a red light bulb in a small lamp on the other side of the room on so he could see in but fish ect. cant see the red light.. and just wait and watch its relly exciting actually . you will prob find a buch of gorilla crabs as well.. good luck and keep us posted

Clicks could be mantis or pistol. Keep watching, it'll show itself eventually.
That is a truly awesome pic Fountainhead. I was going to point TheOtherDay to my gallery for pics of the various TBS criiters but now I'm embarrassed to...
I'd worry more about the gorilla crabs than the mantis, and none at all about the pistol - if that's what it is.

Hey, if you guys liked the picture that crabby guy, you'll like the one below that I took of his brother, who I captured a few days ago. We had a little photo shoot. He doesn't look very happy about it, does he?

What kind of camera is that? Great pixs.
The first gorilla photo was taken with a Nikon CoolPix 8700. The second gorilla (the closer shot) was taken with a Nikon D70 and a Tamron 90mm f/2.8 1:1 Macro lens.

Both crabs are now deceased. Stinks to be them, eh?

how did you kill them???how much does a macro lens cost?( a good, cheaper one)
To be honest, I simply flushed them down the toilet. Both of those suckers had wreaked such havok in my tank that I didn't feel the least bit guilty about it either. I actually kept the second one alive in a quarantine tank as I thought I might hang onto him for awhile. But one of my clowns developed symptoms of internal parasites and I needed to use the tank to treat him. So the crab had to go. Boo hoo for him. I considered letting the crab play in the sump, but decided not to take the chance that he'd miracle his way back into the tank somehow. That's how paranoid I was of that thing.

As far as the lens, I believe that I paid around $300 for that Tamron, used (EX+) from KEH Camera Exchange (www.keh.com).

Hey SpicyBalls...I hope you didn't find those crabs as TBS hitchhikers!

Craby' dick's forgot the exact location... it's near that emtyp police station.. the one they used to shoot 21 jump street i believe.. or something like that..

Ok that's in Baltimore itself. If your in Northern MD (coming down I-95) you may want to stop in NorthEast at a place called Woody's restaurant. Excellent seafood ranging from shrimp to everything imaginable in between. North East is about 10-12 mile south of the Delaware Line.
Down in Rock Hall MD (southern) is where a lot of the crabs and oysters come from , pretty much anywhere in MD on the eastern shore is loaded with a lot of good seafood restaurants.
Another location in Northern MD is Wesley's in Fair Hill MD which is very close to the Delaware line. Really good seafod and a seafood buffet on Wednesdays and Thursdays. If you stop in there I definitely recommend the Chesapeake Bay soup/chowder, it's incredible!
In Elkton where I live (Northern MD) there is the Howard House downtown which has the best Crab Bisque you've ever tasted. A lot of palaces have tried to copy the recipe but aren't even close yet. It's well worth a visit and really good atmosphere.

now that's what i'm talking about... good tips.. this was what we were trying to find while in baltimore.. some nice good non-touristy seafood rest... supposedely people recommended philips (think that's what it's called) but it's big and touristy.. so we went with crabby dicks'... def going back to maryland.. i'll make sure to check those out.. nice!
