TBS Rock

I think I may have killed the mantis shrimp. For the past few night I have been feeding him some small pcs of shrimp and he would come out of his hole and take the shrimp. So tonight when I was feeding him and he came out I pushed a skewer into his hole and I have not seen or heard him since. Now I need to try and get what is left of him out of the hole.....

So far all is well. My ammonia is at 0-.25ppm and all other readings are good. I do have a few questions

1) Should the clams stay on the bottom of the tank or should I move them up? They have not opened up yet

2) The grass you sent, should I leave in on the bottom as well or is there a better place for it.

The Blennys seems happy and is grazing on the rock. The feather duster has not opened at all yet.

I am very happy with everything. Thanks for your help.

Take a look at some updated pics.

very nice, you have alot of neat stuff!

The little plants that are puffy on the end of a stalk should be planted in your substrate. Those are Shaving Brush macroalgae. Mine had actually started growing a new shoot at the base then the green mithrax crab came along and ate the entire plant.

As for the macroalgae that looks like a chain of leaves, I have no idea.

Just wanted to say say thanks for posting your experiences with all of this as I will be getting the package in January and all this info is invaluable.

I have enjoyed sharing my experience with TBS. So far everything is good. My phosphates for some reason creeped up yesterday. All other readings are good. I will recheck them again tomorrow.

I will be posting some new pics very soon.

Thanks to everyone for all of there help and a special thanks goes to Richard for his constant follow up to my newbie questions and his patience.

My Condylactis anenome has retreated into itself and has not really been opened for the past couple of days. All my reading are good except my PH is around 7.8. I have not really been feeding the tank as Richard says not to feed the first two weeks. So I will start my feeding this Saturday. Can someone suggest the best type of food for the bleeny and anenomes?

I spent the other night for almost 1hr trying to get a large mantis out of a pc of rock but he was not coming out. I did get a 2 gorilla crabs though.

Thanks

I feed my anemones fresh cut up raw shrimp (small pieces cut into 1/4") and use a turkey baster to shoot it into the tentacles. You can get raw shrimp from most meat counters in the big supermarkets.

As for my blenny, Stinker, I hand feed it. I use a bamboo skewer and put a small piece of shrimp on the tip and it gobbles it right down and begs for more. I also waited 2 weeks before feeding my tank and I think it emotionally scared the blenny. It isn't happy until its stomach is bulging like its pregnant. And it will steal food from the anemones and the mantis shrimp if it can. It got a set of brass ones let me tell ya!

terry: i used to have -- say 5 years back , different tank etc...
a lawnmower blenny that I could hold a bit of nori or other food between my fingers and the blenny would sit on my hand and eat from it (under water of course)
as if my hand was a rock ledge that had a nice bit of food on it.

It has been a month since the first packages arrived at Midway airport and so far I have no complaints. Every thing is going along fine. My readings have been great . I have not had a ammonia spike since I got the 2nd part of the package. My Nitrates are a little high and I think that is from feeding a little to much. So I will cut back on the feeding.

Everything has survived so far. I found a 1 1/2 in mantis and have kept him in a pitcher with some water for the past month and that thing is still kicking and punching. I did get another mantis in the second shipment and he is much bigger and has made some nice size holes in his rock. I have tried twice to get him out of the rock by removing his rock and soaking it in some salt water with some extra salt and even tried squirting some fresh water in his hole. But after about a hour I gave up. The one time I decided to feed the blenny and the other animals some shrimp the mantis came out of his hole and that is when I realized just how big his is..3inches.....

Can someone recommend a good food for the anemones?
I have a Condylactis Blue and another one I can not identify but you can see it on my online album pic #69

I don't have any rock from richard but what i have seen here and all i hear i will deal with what ever comes on the rock when the time comes !! I 've planed on setting my 75 up for two years now but personel finacial issues came up and put the rock on hold for a while. now it's winter here and i hate to risk shiping in winter . So Richard don't think I've forgotten about our conversation I will do this.

Just a update on the tank.

All is well everything is still alive(event the mantis). Readings are all good. I have noticed the rock turning a little darker then when it arrived. I got a few frags from my brother over the holiday and I am trying to figure out where to put them as he had VHO lights and I have MH. The mantis is getting very aggressive and is starting to go after the crabs and snails. I am have tried to get him out but he is very smart. He puts a rock in his hole any time he is not inside of it. I still have a number of gorilla crabs but the trap seems to get at least one a night. The hardest part so far has been not adding new livestock since I started. But I will continue to be patient as I figure out which corals to go with. Like I mentioned before I have added the following coral frags.

Trumpet/Candy Cane
Green Star Polyps

You can see them here.

I will be adding some more LR and CUC from TBS very soon.

Happy Holidays Everyone.

I noticed your shipment was flown into Midway. I'm in northwest Indiana and was wondering if you would mind me asking how much your shipping was to Midway, and which size package was it?

Cost is about $25-$35 a box. I am getting another box this Saturday. If you want split a shipment sometime let me know...

Wow that's not as much as thought it would be.

Thanks for the info.

As for splitting an order, it's going to be a minimum of six to nine months before I'm ready to order.

I work in the steel industry.....And.....I'm off sick right now. Immediate future is pretty uncertain!

Just a update for everyone. Tank is doing great, I am experiencing a slight diatom bloom. I have replaced the carbon that came with the filter in the Nano and replaced it with Chem Pure Elite. I have tried to keep the temp around 78 but with the MH lights I can not, so I am looking at a chiller.

The Bleeny shows no fear and will eat from my hand. All other livestock is great. The mantis is still around and clicking all the time.

The questions I have are, will the flower anenomes bother the Candleobra? Also as you can see in the pics my Candleobra never fully opens up like my other gorgonians. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

The last 9 pics are the most recent pics.
