what should tds levels read inside your tank

off the charts

even a tiny bit of residual saltwater in a fresh ro/di holding tub will give you tds readings in the hundreds

The TDS after your RO, AND DI should be 0. For what it is after just the RO, depends on your starting TDS, and the rejection rate of your RO membrane.

If you have a 98% rejection rate RO membrane, and your starting TDS is 100, you would be left with 2. The remaining 2 would be removed by the DI resin.

I've also heard that putting the TDS meter in the tank could damage it, though I've not idea how or why or even if that's accurate. In any case, you'll not get a measure on your handheld meters, but it should be around 35 PPT if you're keeping a reef. ;)

You want a 96-98% reduction in TDS with RO only. It does not matter what the starting TDS is as long as you are getting 96-98% reduction. No one can tell you 2 or 10 or whatever because everybodys water and RO unit is different. 96-98% reduction with RO and 0 TDS after DI period.
My tap water TDS is normally over 800 and my RO only TDS averages 3 to 5 with RO/DO being 0.
