TDS meter

need advise on a TDS meter. are they required or desired? Seems like a rather inexpensive meter and I assume is desired? Anyone have a good site for one or are there any used ones out there for sale. please pm me. tks

its a good way to make sure your ro/di water is at 0ppm, and a good way to tell when to change the filters when the ppm is rising above 0..

as far as purchasing one just go to www.froogle.com and look one up they are pretty cheap and fish store online should have one as well.

Absolutely required! Cheap or not it can save your tank, i got a chance once to check my water change water before i used it and even put salt in it and it come out to be 4 TDS!!! ROT is anything above 2-3 TDS means trouble. a nice one can be bough on e-bay (just keep it calibrated) whether in-line or not. i use this:http://www.thefilterguys.biz/tds_meters.htm (the blue one that cost $22)

Fishwiz are you joking? 4 ain't bad.
I don't use one cause mine broke. someday i'll get another. i prefer the handheld ones rather than in-line.

No sir, but true it's not that bad but it is a possible cause of my cyano so i would rather play it safe than wait

Harry if you have an rodi filter, you should have a tds meter so you'll know when it's time to replace cartridges. Inline is the best way to go.
If you don't filter or buy filtered water, you really don't need one.

tks sullyman and others, I use the tap water filter. the catridges change color when they are spent. But i noticed that the green cartridges dont last nearly as long as the orange/rust colored ones (change color when spent). Supposedly they are the same material so given the inconsistancy, I was thinking a tds meter might help take the guess work out. So it sounds like a hand held one is the way to go. do they all need to be calibrated or only certain models/styles. Was hoping calibration was not needed, just one more item to maintain.

I think it is more important to have one if you are using someone elses water. I know my water is good by keeping the filters changed, I don't know how often others change their filters. I have a cheap one, but I don't even use it.
