Temp for seahorses

How crucial is it that the temp remain under 77deg?

Will they adjust to 78-80deg tanks or will they die?

seahorse owners recommend the max temps being 75, with 73-74 being the suggested range. its not that they die, but they are much more prone to bacterial and fungus infections at higher temperatures.

Hmmm, well that isnt good either. Are pipefish the same way? I just cant keep a temp that low without buying a chiller and I dont want to invest the money into that.

Have you tried using a clip on fan or 2 to blow across the top of the water? It really is important that the temps are kept low. I breed seahorses and have learned the tanks need to be kept around 72-74 max. Keep an eye on ebay or the for sale forum for chillers. Winter is the best time to buy them......not as much demand for them.
For what you would spend on meds for a sick seahorse or 2, you could buy a used chiller.

I dont have a seahorse tank set up now, I was just doing a little bit of research to see what I could learn about them. And the problem is my house is kept around 77 deg in the summer time so it makes it hard keeping tanks cool. I will look for used chillers though.

What about pipefish, do they have to be kept in 72-74 deg water as well?

I keep my horses and pipes at about 75 at its highest, usually about 73. I use a chiller in summer, but fans do help. The evaporation is increased. My pipes have no problems with the lower temp.

The sps tank with halides is not a good idea.
1. the seahorses will irritate the sps by hitching to them.
2. the seahorses will irritate the sps by adding A LOT of nitrates to the water.
3. depending on the corals, they could sting or harm the seahorses.
4. seahorses do not appreciate lighting that high, and will spend most of their time under overhangs out of the light, and will probably turn dark or black rather than the beautiful colors you are used to seeing in pics.
5. seahorses cannot handle the type of high and chaotic flow that is needed for an sps tank. it would be incredibly stressful and dangerous for them.
6. is your sps tank with halides able to be kept between 70-74 year round?

Hrmmmmmm maybe seahorses just arnt for me . I guess I will stick with looking at other peoples seahorse tanks instead. thank you to everyone who helped me.
