temp/PH probe submersible?

Are the original Neptune Temp and standard PH probes submersible?

If not how deep should they reach into the water?

Yes they are but some people prefer to float them in styrafoam to keep them above water. Personally I've always had them underwater pretty much as long as I've used the controllers (over 10 years) with no problems.

I agree with Ken. I think in years gone by the cable insulation and waterproofing was inferior to what it is in today's probes. I've had no problems with total immersion. Probably if you could avoid it, great but if not, there's plenty of other things to lose sleep over!

I was not planning on having them fully underwater but good to know I could.
Was just a little worried in case of a power failure where the water level in the sump would raise and the probes would become fully underwater.

I echo what the others said... fully submerging the probes is fine. In one tank, I used a DIY probe holder which under normal conditions held the probes submerged in the sump. I intentionally placed it low so that the probes tips would not be exposed (and therefore would not generate an alarm or bogus data points in the log) during a water change.

According to the apex instruction manual, the temp probe SHOULD be submerged, but they recommend against submerging the PH probe. It states that submerging it would decrease the lifespan of the probe.
