Temp Range

I'm wondering, for those who use a controller to regulate their heaters, how big is the on/off range? Currently, I have mine set to come on at 78.5 and shut off at 79. Should I shoot for a tighter (and thus more stable) range? Or am I good as is?

i think mine is set something very similar, 77-79, and my tank consistently stays 77-80 range

Tank inhabitants can easily handle temp swings..
Many swing 5 deg F or more when halides/lights come on,etc..

I think mine is like 76 on/78 off

So it sounds like you guys are all using a 1 or 2 degree range. I have been using a half of a degree range.

It also sounds like I don't need to worry about keeping it that tight.

It also sounds like you're all running temps a little lower than I have been. I was keeping my temp around 76, but I read that temps closer to 80 increased metabolism (and thus growth) in corals. So I bumped it up a little. I will look a little deeper into that.

When I was running a MH bulb in combination with a couple T5's a variation of 4 or 5 degrees was a daily occurrence. The tank would usually vary between 76-85 throughout the year without any problems. Now that I've switched over to LED's the temperature swings are much less. Right now the tank is at 77 degrees. It might rise a point or two before the day is done, but that's about it. Summertime might be a different story though.

I'm using a 1/2 degree C (because my probe is C) Which I think comes out to 1-2 degrees F (ish)

I don't kick my chiller on until 82F. Over the weekend my temp ran from 77 all the way to 80.
