question rite now my temp runs 76.0 to 76.5 ,and iam thinking of adding a pony tank to my main system.i will need to drop the temp to 74.0 will this cause a mixed reef to catch cold

I do not beleive 74 will hurt anything short term. 76 is ok longterm. I prefer it a bit higher 78 to 80. While most corals live in 80 plus temperatures in the ocean, a bit lower in our reefs seems prudent. Given the extreme concentration of life in the relatively small amount of water a slower metabolism may be benefical particularly in slowing pathogens.

Could be coincidence but I used to run my tank between 77 and 78. Since I raised the temps to 80-81 my tank looks happier. As I said though could be a coincidence. ;)

i ran my tank warmer before we moved into our new house but with the sump room in the basement my system stays rite at 76.o to 76.5.the only exception is when it gets super hot and humid.so why fight it i am getting great growth and color

thanks for the link, looks like iam at the bottom of the accepted range. the reason for trying to get to 74 is to stop bacterial problems
