Temperature Change

I just purchased a new aquamedic 250W MH light and I am noticing a change in my temperature. The tank temperature ranges from 76-84 degrees between night and day cycle. How will this effect my fish and corals? Do I need to regulate the temparature better or can the fish hand it? Thanks!

I am a newbie too so I am tagging along on this one, but one thing I can tell you is that you can reduce the time that the 250W is on. Also, I put a cooling fan (computer fan) blowing on the bulb and water, and I have it on a timer that is sychronized with the timer for my 175W MH . seems to be working so far.

hope that helps.

76-84 is a large daily change. It is likely to have a negative effect on any livestock you keep. I would recommond shooting for a temp change of no more than 2 degrees each day. The goal for most reefkeepers is to maintain a stable temperature.

To achive this, you could add a fan or two and/or raise the lights a little higher from the water surface.

happy reefin'

Try raising your halides a little, I raised mine to 14" above the water and my temp swing has leveled out pretty good

How about setting your heater to kck on at 82 and keep your reef at 82-84 instead unless your lights will continue to heat the water above 84.

I have a 54g Corner Tank, Open Top, 250 watt MHL, It is about 10" from the water surface. I keep my therm. at 78, and keep a fan blowing on the top of my tank. This cuts down a lot of the heat off from the light. My night temp is 78.5 and with the light on and fan running only gets to 79.5. You will want to keep the temp. from going up and down alot like yours is, It will not be good on the corals/livestock. It will be to much of a change. An one to two degree change isn't so bad.
