temperature

Just wondering how you nano guys keep the temperature stable and low?

I started a 5gallon experiment tank(nothin in it yet) The water is 92f. 1 400gph pump, a prizm skimmer and a 20watt florecent light.

As madnav said, using a fan is definitely one of the cheapest, cost-effective ways for keeping temps down. Open top + small fan + heater for the most part will keep your temps consistent, basically cooling the tank to the point where the heater kicks in every so often to bump the tank's temp back up, especially since it's more difficult to fine-tune the evap rate as opposed to just changing the temperature knob on a heater.

I'd say your pump is probably generating way too much heat in that small tank. Try changing to a different pump, running it externally (closed loop?), or taking it out altogether.

I have the Aquapod 24. With all lights running, my tank can climb as high as 81-82 degrees. A fellow member here suggested changing to a more efficient pump---like the MaxiJet. I did this and saw a 2 degree drop to 80 degrees. I am also going to eventually add another fan, as it was suggested too. I don't use a heater, of course. I live ing the south, so it really does not get too cold here. I do have a heater on hand, however just in case.

also contributing to your heat problem is the lack of surface area on the hex tanks - which is one of the reasons they are generally not used in SW as well as the fact they are hard to light for reefs...
