hey everybody, just pulled the trigger on a yellowbar hogfish(terelabrus rubrovittatus) from diver's den. anyone have any experiences with these fish? any advise? thanks!

hello again everyone, my order arrived from diver's den this morning around 10:00 am. my yellowbar hogfish was very active in the bag...great sign. they packed him in alot of water...I would take a guess & say it's because it is so expensive. anyway, this fish is awesome!!! looks better than the picture (diver's den). my photo's aren't very good, sorry. I really love this fish & I'm very pleased with the quality & health when it arrived. the description said max size is 3 1/2". but after I checked into these fish, I believe it's more like 4 to 5". does anyone know the correct size it will reach? there is two varietys...one doesn't have the yellow stripe( mine does).

p://[/IMG] I can't believe it, I finally did it. this picture really doesn't do this fish justice!

I want to see this fish but I cannot. Not sure how you're trying to post images. The easiest is to get a free photobucket account. Then cut and paste the "IMG" image link into your text.

That's bizarre, your pic shows in my quote of your post. Anyhoo, that fish is nifty looking. If I had a less serene fish population, I'd love to do a hog. Good luck with it.

thanks for the support!!!! the fish is probably 2 1/2" & the add said "very hard to find". I didn't really want to spend that kind of money on the fish{$300} but I couldn't get it out of my head! If it lives long & stays healthy, probably worth the money. hopefully, it want end up inside my anemone or jump out....or something crazier?

Actually, I'd have thought a Deep Water Hogfish like that would cost a few hundred more. Getting these cannot be easy. Or cheap..
Beautiful & unusual addition!

Matthew

I love that fish. I saw one a few weeks ago at my LFS.

What other fish do you have in that system? Does it get picked on?

keep us posted on how it's doing as they are not often seen and there isn't a ton on info about their husbandry?

thanks for all the incouragement! 2 days after placing him in the new surroundings, he seems to be doing well. hanging out in the corner of tank with my fairy wrasse. I have a peaceful community of fish....no aggressive or semi aggressive fish. yellow tang, blue tang, chevron tang, cave basslet, black & white clown, percula clown, yellowtail blenny, 2 orangespotted filfish, 4 yellowtail damsels, neon goby, shrimp goby. 300 gl. tank. I have not seen any agression on the hogfish, but he does seem rather skeetest right now. not eating a whole lot right now either, but not too concerned at this point because he has feed...PE mysis. skrajo11...curious, how much for the fish at your LFS?

i think he was $300, but I can't remember. I'm a little worried that he/she won't be able to compete with all of your other cool inhabitants.

good point. I've been target feeding & it does go after it. It is becoming a little more curious & is roaming a little farther this evening. I plan on finding a new home for the damsels because they are breeding & making a mess in my tank with the sand they stir-up....sand everywhere! the 2 OSFF & yellowtail blenny are in a separate tank connected to my main system. If things don't work-out for him or her in 300, I could relocate to the 60 gl. where the filefish & blenny are. I really believe it will be OK & settle in when I find a new home for those crazy damsels. my plan is to catch them at feeding time one evening...hopefully I can catch 2 or 3 at one time?
